Yes
I went for the original but I do believe that a lot of the replicas do the job just as well! Can't really advise which ones though but I'm sure someone here can :)

Hi Dan

If you're after a 3rd party grip, Hahnel or Meike seem to be a popular chioce and a known name. Personally, it depends on how much you are going to save if it's worth it over a genuine Canon one.

Have you thought about 2nd hand ? Pop a wanted add on here, keep an eye on the classifieds....

I've just got a pixel pro one for my 6D, first trip out with it today, can report back if you like?

I bought a battery grip for my 7D from ebay last week.

Cost me £25 delivered.
I unpacked it, the shutter button fell out, I complained, got £20 refund and told to 'keep it'.
I glued the button back in, now I have a camera grip for £5 (including postage :D ) which looks completely indistinguishable from a genuine one.
And it correctly registers the status of both batteries.

Very impressed with my ebay bargain :D

Thanks for the replies. Presumably the genuine one doesn't include an extra battery?

correct , but if you do go genuine route then you might as well go for the genuine battery also , .... expensive hobby this photography lark  :(

I'm tempted to buy the £40 knock-off with 4 batteries but I guess the build quality of the grip will be a bit shoddy... as someone said the shutter button fell off of one they had. And I had a bad experience with non-genuine Nikon batteries before.

Ah dilemmas, and I guess I have this student overdraft for a reason... :suspect:

as someone said the shutter button fell off of one they had.
But I also said I got a refund, and just glued it back in.
Not ideal, but I've got a cheap grip with full functionality that looks the same as the OEM.

It's your money, so buy what you are most comfortable with

Might just go for a cheap one. Vanity is the main problem you see, as long as it looks legitimate who cares right?

All the gear no idea

I was failing to see what the genuine ones gave that the 'aftermarket' ones didn't.... moreso after reading that the quality of the aftermarkets seemed ok.

It was very ironic that when I got it, I took it out the box and said to my wife, wow look at this, it's excellent quality for the money.... then the button fell out
I contacted the guy who just didn't want it back, so gave me a 80% refund.

A blob of super glue and it's good as new ;)

^^ I was the same, but it is useful holding the camera 'normally' for portrait format shots, but more importantly for me I don't like wasting time switching batteries over.
I will take solace in the fact I can just keep snapping away without having to keep half an eye on the battery... and with an upcoming wildlife holiday that's pretty important to me.
But that's me, everyone else has their own reasons

Funnily enough one of my flatmates has a 550D with what I thought was a genuine BG-E8 grip. Just put it on my camera to try it and it's a cheap aftermarket one. Seems completely genuine.

Have ordered a genuine LP-E8 battery and a cheap BG-E8 grip. Thanks for your help everyone!

My only concern would be if you wanted to use a Black Rapid type strap where the weight is all taken by the tripod mount.
