Canon announces EOS 7D ***Official Discussion thread***

Well I hate to be the cynic, but:

BH current 5DII price is $2700 which with NY tax at todays likely tourist exchange rate is £1795.

The best price on CPB is around £1850 delivered for a UK camera, and I am sure that could be bettered with a little effort.

So what is the point of importing a camera, dodging customs and then having agro if it gets a fault?:nono:

The 7D will be in a price war like all the other cameras-it is market forces and the UK market is actually far more competitive than the US as there are far more suppliers per head of purchasing population(and no I am not an economics boffin just a businessman!!)

...

...Lucky my wife was born in LA and holds a US passport then:D. Anyway, I think Passport Control they have bigger issues to worry about. Also, so long as it is used within the USA beforehand I believe new sales import duty and VAT will not apply.

Do you think certain well respected sellers on here pay full import duty and VAT?

If you get stopped, and they think you are trying to avoid tax, they will confiscate. They were not born yesterday ;) It happened to me, and I only got my stuff back after proving everything was purchased in the UK.

If you are questioning whether Kerso pays UK duty and VAT, he does. He told me so.

Canon have been very crafty with the price £1699 incl VAT. VAT is 15% at present and will soon be going back to 17.5%, so the 7D will be even more expensive.
Money to the govenment not Canon though, why not reduce it until VAT goes back up.

In my opinion this pricing makes the 50D look very attractive as the second hand market is likely to be flooded via the early adopters.

CT / Kaz and many others have shown the 50D to be an awesome tool in the right hands and the huge difference in prices between the two could be better invested in glass.

I'd agree with that actually. If you currently have a 30D or 40D, and your longest glass is around 300 or 400mm, then you'll see a bigger gain in reach by investing in a 50D than a 500mm f4L, and for a lot less money!

I'm fortunate in having collected my long glass, so the 7D is attrractive to me for the extra reach, improved AF system, and weather sealing, and I'll still have one 50D for backup.

And I've just been told mine will be in stock on Saturday - Monday at the latest.

From what I've heard of prices so far it seems to me like Kerso and Stuart have the best deals (IMHO), but I am keeping my powder dry, awaiting reviews and for a further price drop, before parting with my money. I have enough bodies (four) to tide me over for now :)

I've just had this e-mail bumf from CPN about the 7D.

CLICKY

A feature which I hadn't heard before is that you can now enter copyright info into the camera and it's automatically added to each image. Very nice touch!

50D does that as well.

I am switching over from Nikon to Canon and placed an order on a 7d last night to be dispatched on Monday, with any luck it will arrive on Tuesday for my birthday.
Unfortunately to begin with I will only have my 7d, 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6(?), does anyone know much about this lens? and a Speedlite 430exII
However on the plus side I can rent out more or less any Canon prime up to 300mm f/2.8 that Canon currently make from my college, they also stock 24-70mm f/2.8's and 70-200 f/2.8's amongst other goodies!

Really looking forward to shooting with this camera but will struggle to part with my wee d70.

Where from CT?

The 18-135 is the new lens comming out, so I doubt anyone will have any real experience with it yet.

Where from CT?
From Stuart at Digtal depot. I was in the first 5 pre-ordering though.

I just had an e-mail from Jessops who say they now have the 7D in stock and are extending their pre-order deal till 6pm next Monday. I'm not sure what's in the deal- if anything?

As coldpenquin says it's one of the two new lenses launched with the camera, so I doubt anyone will have done much testing with it yet.

Some details HERE

I think the "deal" is a free 60"x80" Jessops print:lol:, 16gb cf card and extra battery. All that amounts to £233 of free extra's for the price of camera and lenses rrp, £66 print, £95 card and £72 battery

Kind of ironic that the opening pic, of the 7D and new macro lens with hybrid IS, is awash with camera shake  I find it hard to take a review seriously that presents its credentials so poorly
Indeed - it's sort of marginally better than some of the ebay shots you see advertising top end gear.

Now in stock at Jessops, I think I'll be going in for a play tomorrow :D

To be honest it's a pretty poor review anyway.

Just picked mine up from RGB in Middlesbrough and put the battery on to charge........

Simon.

I want mine nowww! No longer do I appreciate my wee d70 sitting in the corner!

Body only or with one of the new lenses? I'm equally interested to hear about the new lenses!

Neither - I went for the 'Power Bundle' which gave the body, grip and a spare battery. I have the body and spare battery, but unfortunately no grip at the moment.

Simon.

Just had a mild panic attack...

Stupid Jessops don't have the 18-135mm lens in stock and the site says they won't be in stock for 10days...

Do you guys reckon the "pre-order deal" comes with the 18-135 in the same box as the body or do you think they just pull one off the shelf, meaning I have to wait another 10days for stock?

Kit Lenses normally come in the box :)
