Canon announces EOS 7D ***Official Discussion thread***

i think i still want the 5DII for what i do mainly portraits and landscapes. just wish it had an improved AF system.

As a 50D user, I see the 7D as the next step up, rather than going for a 1D Mk III. It is a good inbetween body, which is more at the top end of the range.

Stu, if you can sell it for £1k then I will be selling up the 50D and investing in a 7D :D

If you're a 5d shooter you will have glass to match a full frame sensor. Going back to a 1.6 crop would change all your focal lengths by 60%, not really what you want.

Bottom line is that

If you shoot a lot of moving subject, far away mostly, then 7D.

If you shoot people, closer, who don't move around so much, 5Dii.

If you have lots of money, and cover both in one camera, 1DsMK3.

Bang on. Unlike Nikon Canon have segmented their range extremely well which is great for their bottom line, but no so good for the prosumer like us as we can't get the "one camera fits all" without a pro body.

And why oh why is does the 7d only 3 shot bracketing system with only +-2stops. The 350d had this!

Looks like a clear direct competitor to the D300, but with more resolution. For sports and BID where reach is vital, would probably be a great solution.

it looks good on paper.

That is it right there, innit?

We are all speculating now...let's hold on for some real life shooters to play and report back before we rewrite all the books...

Back to my point on the first page of this thread - I want to see some real results and ideally get my hands on one before having to decide...

Well said, its impossible to decide if you don't see real results and have a play yourself to see how it handles.

One thing I've not seen on the spec list is whether the centre AF point will AF at f/8. If so, could be interesting to the birders.

Also, I can't help wondering whether the 120 JPEG burst and 15 RAW burst is deliberately holding back so that there's room for a 1DIV. Even the 50D does more...

Is Rob Galbraith (never heard of the chap before), not considered to be impartial?
I would like to see some birding shots. As far as I see it, this is a replacement to a 50d really. There is a 60d now rumoured for Feb. however.

What I would like at the moment, is for the Canon site to have the user manual, and not some irritating flash

I've just read about the 7D, they seem to have snuck that one out, haven't heard a word about it until warehouse express tried flogging me one for about 1700. It's a cropped sensor affair but with what looks like a half decent AF system, if they take the best bits out of this and the 5D mkII it looks like it could be pretty good. anyway I don't think it's been discussed too much here so thought I'd just throw it out there (...if you don't like it, just send it right on back). The specs are below for the lazy ones:

Sorry guys didn't realise someone had started a thread about this already, carry on..

This could be interesting, should have a nice big overtime payment coming at the end of Sept, was starting to burn a whole already but couldn't decide what to spend it on, will look seriously at the reviews for this when they start to come out.

It's a lot more than a 50d in my opinion.

Rob G is probably impartial after the grief he caused Canon in respect of the 1DIII. However, I want photographers I know and respect who take the same sort of pictures as me.

Portraits and Landscape doesn't really need a better AF, you'll have on your hands TIME and LIGHT. To elements where when there is a lack of, faster/better AF is needed, but if you can control light and have lots of time then you can even MF your shots so better AF isn't justified.

I dont get it, its almost as if they are saying we are not doing a 1D MK IV (1.3x crop). Unless the 1D MK IV has some additional spectacular features such as 12fps+ at approx 12MP I'd be surprised how they can justify the huge premium for weather sealing and a 1.3 crop sensor.

This seems to be a good solution for the Flyboys. I happily shoot aviation with my 40D, i will be moving up to a 1D(2N or3). If the AF on the 7D is as good as they say, and the res is good, it would be a good move for aviation as the crop still remains. The loss of crop factor on the 1 series (albeit only a fraction) does worry me slightly as plane get further away each year. So a 100-400L on this crop body would yield better frame fillers.
Dean:)

Ah, I've been looking at an upgrade path for my D40... I think I've probably got a few steps to go in between these two though!

Shame its not Full Frame though!

If its FF, it would kill the 5Dii AND the 1D series........

Got emails from Warehouse Express and Park earlier, looks very interesting. I'd like to see some reviews and I'd like to have a go myself first but if price was a tad lower, £1250 ish then I think I'd get one :) On paper looks very appealing.

Certainly reads impressive, will wait to see results and hopefully after the initial hype a reasonable price drop

Well he did said around £1000. Will have to wait and see

No, he said:

'We havent received the official pricing yet but once we do ill be able to give you a better Pre Order price than the £1699.

I doubt it will be £1000 though ;) '

The wink is pretty crucial.

I see us Brits are being ripped off again

Price US $1699 Body only

UK £1699 Body only

Todays exchange rate 1.00 British pounds sterling = 1.63 US dollars

So with todays exchange rate
1,699.00 US dollars = 1,044.04 British pounds sterling
1,699.00 British pounds sterling = 2,764.85 US dollars

How can they charge over $1000 dollars more in the UK?

To be more exact $1065.85

I am just hoping someone cocked up and sent the US price list to all UK retailers. As can be seen above US price in UK £ = £1044

Cheers

Ron

We will bend over a take it too, just like every time the government increases fuel duty.

I'm excited. I was considering an upagrade to a 50D. I think I'll wait a few months and look at the 7D around Xmas time.

:)

That's the same as saying the 5DII killed the 1DsIII but it is still selling even though it is more than twice the price (almost 3x) for a sensor that gives pictures that aren't quite as good as the 5DII

I'm still not convinced the 1DIV won't be a full frame camera (head to head with D3)

Not so much 'killing the existing model' - more how much more can Canon add to justify a new model. Are you thinking they may drop the DS moniker and the 1D becomes a FF camera then or a FF sports camera with a resolution similar to the 7D and we keep the 1DS for a full blown resolution FF? Whatever happens, it certainly looks like the battle is heating up :D

I agree with the above sentiment, with the 7d having a fast 1.6 crop with decent AF the 1d mkIV is mostly like going to edge towards a all singing, all dancing fast full frame.

I can't wait, purely so it knocks the second hand prices of the 1d MKIII down :)

I have just ordered myself a 5D MK2 after considering both of these. I need the full frame facility. I was waiting for prices to drop but cant wait any longer.
