Forgive me if I'm not suppose to reply in here, but I don't get this?
how and why would this be useful?
would this not just be a 280-560mm zoom?

Or is there going to be some fancy switchable wizardry to 'disable' the extender when not required??

This is relevant to my interests. It may upset the wife and the bank manager though.

Well, if you read the link:
http://www.dpreview.com/news/1102/11020708canon200400mm.asp

Canon has announced it is developing the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x lens, which features a built-in switchable 1.4x teleconverter. With the converter engages, it becomes a 280-560mm F5.6 lens. Designed for sports and wildlife photographers the lens will feature weatherproof construction and is scheduled for launch later this year.

Constant F4 is nice.

Interesting the new 320 EX Flash has video mode support.

Time to start saving, it'll be expensive, but what a great lens to go with a 24-70 and 70-200.

I wonder if it'll take a normal extender on the back too. :)

I asked on another forum about the 3 mode IS and a poster by the name of Trick uncovered this:

"Newly Added IS Mode 3: The new EF 300mm and 400mm IS II lenses are the first to introduce Canon’s new IS Mode 3.

A third IS Mode was added to both lenses, allowing for a less distracting/more natural correction as perceived by camera operators looking through the viewfinder.

This new stabilization mode is similar to IS Mode 2 in the respect that it can detect and correct for panning by shutting off IS correction in the panning direction, but the difference is that IS correction occurs only during the actual exposure in IS Mode 3. (As in IS Modes 1 and 2, camera shake and panning detection occurs whenever the shutter button is pressed halfway.)

As a result, the image in the viewfinder moves more naturally while panning, and battery power is conserved. This feature is expected to be welcomed by sports photographers as well as those who photograph birds in flight."

Useful for those, like me, that were unsure :)

It sounds like an absolute must have lens, hope they have a bit more info on the Canon stand at focus.
