Canon has announced the EOS-1Ds Mark III, the first 35mm-style digital SLR to break the 20MP barrier. The new model combines a 21.03 million image pixel self-cleaning sensor and maximum 5 fps shooting rate in a body that's nearly identical in appearance to the EOS-1D Mark III, and shares most of that camera's features and specifications as well. The EOS-1Ds Mark III has a larger viewfinder than the EOS-1D Mark III, a narrower ISO range of ISO 100-1600 (plus 50 and 3200) and support for the UDMA protocol for quicker writing to an inserted CompactFlash card.

Noooooo! Oh gawd - how much will this be? :gag:

:notworthy:

$7,999 - so, with a quick 1.97 $ to £ conversion, plus UK taxes and increased distribution expenses, i reckon about £7,500.

Dammit, just dribbled in my keyboard :)

So the amazon advert yesterday wasn't a typo then.

For what you can get at $2:£1 you can fly to the USA, hire a car, buy the camera, a 70-200 f2.8 IS (or similar), spend a week travelling around JellyStone or Canyon or ... wherever.. and still have change in your pocket.

That kinda pricing makes you mad doesnt it.

Well the tendency has been for the flagship 1DS models to drastically reduce in price with each new model, so I'd think this will hit the UK market at around £5K?

Still a bloody mortgage.

Oh and...

at the current exchange rate $7999 = £4028.83.

Fat chance I know! :(

I'm either older and wiser or feeling very skint - it looks great but cant think of a reason to upgrade.. has my mojo died? :'(

LOL I hear you. I dunno really. It means I could crop 50% of useless image background and still end with 10+ megapixels, but then I have to crop more to begin with. I'm sure there's a benefit there in the end - it's just whether it's really worth £5K.

Be interested to hear how much Kerso will be knocking these out for...

Just get one ordered, think kerso will be the best uk price..

Interesting editing there busterboy, from:

"Just ordered one...:whistling: " LOL!

Wish I could order one... only just got a Dn Mk2 from the Kerso.... Now where did I put the address of the £35mill winner? :D

How many consumer hobbiests will be purchasing this flagship model at that price..

Its just driven a cart through our resale opportunities mate :gag:

OMG! Download the sample image from the bottom of the first page of that link! 61mb.

Soz ...it's just a 9mb download but 61mb opened.

Holy-Jeffing-Christ-on-a-Bike (not you this time Cedric ;))

Thats a doozie - i may be changing my mind..........

Looks like it's unsharpened too. Just apply a little sharpening to it. Un effin believable!

Thats why i got the Dsmk2, resolution = detail

Just done that, applied USM 200%, 1.3px. Utterly stunning detail! Never mind those blackheads Tim, just look at the little white hairs above her left eye (right as you look at her) and on the bridge of her nose!

Yeah sod it lets get one ordered..

Do not worry Mr Jonnyreb, your mojo is alive and well.

Exercising a little common sense will not kill your mojo. :D

Anyway, good luck to any well off amateur togs that buy it. I hope they enjoy the file storage and backup headaches those files are going to cause. :naughty:

Just as an excercise, I downloaded the 9mb jpeg portrait image in Notch's link above, opened it and saved it as a 60 mb Tiff.

I then cropped the image by half and then by half again, leaving me with a 14.6mb Tif.

I then bicubically upsized it by 200% to 58.6mb - well in excess of image library minimum requirements.

The following two pics are 1:1 crops from the resized image. The first being totally unsharpened.

This image would sail through library vetting.

The next is the same image with normal sharpening applied..

Damned impressive!

This IS impressive! Out of interest Cedric, what settings are you calling "normal" sharpening?

I applied USM about three times is all.

The advantages for snapping Long Tail Tits are pretty obvious!

Apart from time and having £12,000 in the first place, what would stop people going to the States and buying two, posting the boxes back to themselves, stuffing the cameras into their flightbag as a tog, coming back and selling one and keeping one which funds your own new camera?

Hard bit would be to find someone to buy it if you are not a retailer at £6000 I guess!::shrug: ...now, how can I convince the bank manager to extend overdraft to £12,000?

Anyone want to buy a Kidney?

For someone who can only dream about this sort of resolution, can someone explain how you can get more pixels in a sensor that is 24x36mm - apparently the same as the 1Ds Mk11.

What I mean is, wouldn't it have been better to have a bigger sensor and then add more pixels and not cram more pixels into the same size sensor - or am I being daft

A very good point! The issue with smaller pixels in the past has been the gap between their lenses - apparently Canon (and reputedly now Nikon) have re-engineered to cram the smaller lenses closer together, with less light and detail loss. This wll mean similar levels of noise to the lower resolution 1Ds mkII as less power is needed to drive the sensor - combined with the image processing of dual Digic III's this will be a dream camera

An excellent shot by Canon across Nikons bow
now that Nikon have given in to the laws of physics and gone Full frame with the D3 they're now about on a pixel count par with Canon's 5D, when will Nikon catch up I ask??
ps didnt I read somewhere that the FX chip is made by Sony?

Cue flaming responses from the Dark Side

lights blue touch paper and stands well back

It's not that simple unfortunately. The lenses on your camera throw a circular image which just encompasses the oblong sensor - the corners of the sensor will be pretty well touching the edges of the circle. If you made the sensor larger then you'd need to redesign the camera bodies to put the lens further away from the sensor to throw a larger image circle. Think about the bulk and shape of a medium format camera - you'd be getting towards that.

The focal plane shutter would have to be much bigger too and would be even noiser than it is now, not to mention the mirror, focusing screen and viewfinder having to be redesigned to cope with the larger image.

It's not gonna happen - getting a full frame 35mm size sensor is a huge achievement, the pixel count will increase and noise will decrease as the technology develops.
