I`ve been looking at the canon 70-200 f2.8 l but pricewise it`s out of my budget so my question is do other manufacturers offer an alternative that gives an acceptable image quality? many thanks Harvey

I believe the Sigma 70-200 2.8 is fairly well regarded and photozone give it a decent review

Steve

If you are not desperate for the f/2.8 the Canon F/4 IS version is excellent, weather proof and fair bit lighter too

I have the canon 70-300 usm is but would like the 2.8 for better lowlight shooting

Second non is? It is a cracking lens so is worth saving up for it.

I recently bought the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC. I'd recommend it, great IQ and fast focusing. I also looked at the Sigma OS version and the Tamron was quicker

Non IS F2.8 200 is a real gem.

The Canon 70-200 F4 non IS lens is fantastic. Obviously it isn't as good in lower light as the 2.8, but for the price it's well worth a purchase. I don't use it that often due to what I generally take photos of, but when I do it's good to know it's unbelievably reliable.

As above, there is Sigma and Tamron lenses as an alternative.

As has been recommended the Canon 70-200 F4 is a belter of a lens and well worth considering. The F4 version is much cheaper than the 2.8IS, the F4 IS version is approx 1/2 the price of the 2.8IS...

I went through a similar thing a year ago, I looked at - did I need the 2.8 over the 4 and also was the IS important or not (due to the extra cost). Do you want to buy new or are you happy with 2nd hand - there are a couple in the classifieds here.

I would say if you do want the Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS version then save up and get it, you won't be disappointed, don't plump for something else so you can have it now, as you'll probably look back and if only...

Lots of good advice here. If you try a second had F4 or F2.8 Non IS then if your not 100% happy then you can always pass it on and it should not cost too much.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply,Harvey
