Picked up a Canon AE1 from a local dealer for £55. It was down from £70. It's in immaculate condition. Put a battery in and everything works perfectly, except for the battery level button. Strange.

Regarding the battery level - did you look at the manual? Does the meter needle swing at all? I just checked the manual and it needs to go to f/5.6 or wider.
 
Canon manual cameras had some great lenses that can be bought so cheap these days!
 
I use Tamron Adaptall AD2 lenses...

Everything works, self timer, metering etc. It's just not producing sound when the battery check is pressed or when the self timer is flashing.

I think the beep is for the AE-1 Program. With the original AE-1 you have to look in the viewfinder at the meter needle.
 
my Canon AE-1 needs a new battery compartment door

I've emailed Miles Whitehead -- anybody else do Canon repairs...? thanks
