Indeed - the A1 was the better spec'd camera. The actual top of the range Canon camera aimed at the pro was the F1 - a purely manual camera, built like a tank, but it was in essence much the same as the Nikon F Series which was universally used by pros at that time ( for 35mm work anyway) and didn't offer anything different to persuade them to change.
It was the A1 though, with it's huge choice of modes which captured the imagination of the pros, and they were quick to take it up and use it alongside their Nikons. An accessory 5fps motor drive made it even more appealing to the sports/reportage togs.
