I'm thinking of getting this lens, primarily for doing gigs in poorly lit venues. I've found that my 24-105L f4 really struggles and I'm using the 50mm f1.8 frequently, the 85mm is obviously a bit longer so the combination of the two will hopefully suit most venues.

I was looking at the 70-200mm f2.8L but think the wider aperture on the 85mm would be the better bet.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Dave

well not for your particular application but this is an awesome lens IMO. It's almost always on my 5D and I find it just brilliant, TBH. The bokeh is also really nice and it's great at parties, can snap away without people noticing as no need for the flash.

This is at 1.8 btw: http://sittingbourneSPAMerver.com/downloads/Photos/TP_Shared/IMG_0413_edited-2.jpg

I believe CT has one of these. At least think I remember him posting some shots with the lens when it was new.
(I'd guess that CanonBob has a one of them, he seems to have one of everything else).

Me I just swallow every time I think about its price

OG, I think you're talking about the 85mm f1.2 L The OP's subject was the f1.8, just a mere £900 or so cheaper.....

I to have been considering this lens, as it would be excellent for portraits on the end of my 40D

Yeah CT has the 1.2 L version, which looks insane.

For gigs I think the 70-200 would be better. You're not always going to be able to move around, so will need the range of the 70-200.

I have this lens and its a cracker - i use it for low light in churches etc...

The Canon 85mm 1.8 is amazing - tack sharp, great colours and great bokeh. Manages to get focus in near pitch black, cannot rate it highly enough

Thanks for the info, I appreciate what 8utters is saying about not having the room to move around and needing the range, but in my experience the bigger venues have better lighting, it's the smaller darker venues where the 85mm would be better.

After Santa's been I will use the cash to get one I think!
