Canon 80D now or wait for 6Dmk2?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if you can help me decide to buy a Canon 80D now or whether I should wait for the Canon 6Dmk2.

I've currently got a Canon 700D, which is my first DSLR and one I've had for two years now. I feel like I am ready to upgrade as some of the features on the Camera I find limiting for me.

Things I need my Camera for - a bit of everything really, Landscape, Sport, Airshows, Macro, Wildlife, a tiny bit of astro and also family shots of the kids.

Reasons I want to upgrade - Canon 700D sensors a bit dated now, better Dynamic Range would be welcome. I want faster burst rate to capture more shots within a second. Better ISO performance. Much better autofocus system... they're the main reasons for upgrading.

I know the 6Dmk2 specs have only been rumoured so far and not announced, and nothing is mentioned of the AF system and the burst rate etc. but I'm guessing it's not going to match the 80D's AF system and amount of AF points etc?

I don't want to wait for a few months clinging onto the hope that the 6Dmk2 will be just as good as the 80D in that regard to find out that it isn't and I could have got myself an 80D sooner. I'd also be saving the best part of a grand if the 6Dmk2 is going to cost as much as it probably will (£2k)...

I also have a 10-18mm EFS lens, 105mm Macro, 55-250 EFS, 150-600 Sigma, so if I did go FF I'd have to invest in new glass as well but if it's going to offer me superb IQ and a focusing system which would be fine for wildlife and sports etc. then I guess it might be worth it.
 
Sports, airshows, wildlife would suggest 80D (I use a 7DII) to me. The swivel screen would be useful for macro too, but then I guess you already know that from your 700D.

I was in a similar situation myself a few months ago. I ended up with the 80D.

I doubt the 6DII will have all the features the 80D has as it would then be competing with the 5D which would not make sense for Canon to do. Also if you already have EF-S lenses it makes sense to make use of them.

My rule now is that any new lenses I buy will be EF with the view that in a couple of years I will probably go Full Frame and then will have lenses to use rather than having to effectively invest in a whole other system.

I have the 80D really good camera I bought from Portus Digital fine no issues with a 3 year warranty (I consider myself a mini Google regarding the payment of tax) You already have EFS lenses which will not work as you probably know the move to full frame with lenses is a long one and with cost.

As you rightly recognise the new 6D will cost more if the specs between the old 6D and new one are not much I would either pick a new 6D mk1 a couple months after the new 6D launch normally see healthy price reductions at this point. One other thought buying any equipment with the current FX rates is more expensive maybe wait to the rates improve maybe Good luck in your decision I know it can be fraught to say the least

I know this is obvious but it warrants saying, the 80D is perfectly capable of shooting good landscapes, so is any crop sensor for that matter.
 
Have a look at some of my pics with the 80D and sigma 150-600 sport ,mainly in the bird section ,then it's your call
 
No idea about the 80D I have only had a 450D and a 6d. I loved the 450d and love the 6D I am only a hobbyist.From what you say I would deffo go with the 80d as you will find the focus and burst rate limiting if shooting fast moving subjects frequently. Don't get me wrong I I love the 6d it suites me just fine, I won't be parting with mine anytime soon.

It's a great camera but I love the touch and articulating screen on my 700D. I find it very useful.
 
I sometimes think, why wait for a camera (6d2) which may disappoint you when released and enjoy a camera which is suitable for your needs now. 80D seems the obvious choice for your needs.
 
Lets not be silly about it, the 80D now ans the 6dMK2 when it arrives. Sorted. :banana:

The 80D has a vastly improved dynamic range and a better sensor imho .we have two mk2 and one mk1 in house to compare With .and although the 7's are good I find for wildlife in general the 80 excels ,in fact the only other camera I would consider up against it is a 1D4 .

In your view is the sensor say 1 stop or whatever better than the 7dii or is it the image rendering as well. Sorry to hijack the OP's thread but when people comment it's rare to find togs who have experience of both and can compare side by side
 
its a touch of both really ,the 7d2 fan boys will have there own views so i don't really want to start a major argument .all i can say is i prefer the 80D .btw i also shoot with a mate that has a 7d2 and sigma S lens the same as mine and he readily admits he can't possibly get the high iso shots i do .and take into account that a skilled photoshop operative will be able to squeeze 10% extra out of most pics as well .
yes the 7d2 is faster focussing (marginally) and has a higher burst rate(marginally) but as a wildlife photographer with nearly 10 years experience over a massive range of canon and nikon cameras and lenses i really think this is more than adequate at the sub £1000 price bracket .a unlimited budget could get you better if you can stretch to it,but does your p/p skills and perceived use warrant it
