Canon 800mm L IS vs. Sigma 300-800mm EX IF

Yes
Both at 800mm f5.6 (open wide).
200% Center crop and full frame. No sharpening.
First is the Canon, second is the Sigma

All very good but I think to compare them they should have been mounted on the same camera with the same shutter speed
 
They were mounted on cameras with the same sensor (550D and 7D) and I used the same aperture and the same ISO which was much more important than the shutter speed for image quality, especially when using a tripod.

To get the same ISO, aperture and shutter speed with the same camera I would have to use controlled conditions such as artificial light as the sun would most likely not give exactly the same light for a period 10 to 15 minutes until I tested the lenses back to back on the same camera.
 
Isn't there a difference in the low pass filter between the 550D and 7D that may effect results?

Noise looks lower on the second - which body was that?

Otherwise, Canon looks sharper and more contrasty, but not by much to warrant the big price difference.
 
Canon is a prime, sigma is a zoom with a fantastic range. I would fully expect the prime to be sharper, but then the canon can't zoom out to 76543 hundred can it..........;)

Hardly a fair comparison really.

This was an image quality test.
If you want to take other factors into consideration then yes the Canon has IS and faster AF. The Sigma on the other hand is a zoom which makes it easy to find the subject and it is much better between 300 and 799mm!
 
Looks pretty damn close to me. I'd say the Sigma just wins by a Gnats chuff.

It looks like it needs more testing on the same camera under the same conditions. The Canon 800mm with its two fluorite lens elements, one UD element, and one Super-UD-glass element should be beating a Sigma zoom which is half the price.

You would think so especially as this is not even the DG one. It looks like it is an exceptional copy and it is not due to the camera or conditions as the camera sensor is the same and so were the conditions at the time the shots were taken.
 
The 7D has a better exposure of colour IMHO (seen this on other 7D vs xxxD shots too). Also not sure, but the Canon looks to be very slightly front focused - the shoulder feathers appear to be in better focus compared to the eye... Or maybe it's me...
 
A good comparison of lenses i tried both of these before settling on the 600mm F4 i.s if the siggy was fitted with OS i think Sigma would sell an awful lot more of them :thumbs:

Forget the comparison for a moment, I'm just astonished at the IQ of the Sigma! There seems to be no visible colour fringing for a lens without all the UD stuff, and it looks like it's capturing a lot of detail.

When you start to compare it to the Canon prime, it becomes obvious that this is a VERY good Sigma indeed! Great work!
 
you didnt buy the siggy off ebay last week did you ? There was 1 on there sold for 2250 , was away or I would have pushed it hard
 
The 300-800 belongs to a friend. He did ask me if I wanted to buy it from him some time ago but after this comparison he wants to keep it for some reason! ...
 
Surprisingly good IQ, but the bokeh looks horrible behind the duck.
