I have had my 7Dmk2 since December and it had been fine i used it on holiday in the US and got some good results. However i shoot a lot of airshows and they have just kicked off so i used the 7Dmk2 in anger at my first event, i used the Canon 100-400 at the first event in May and the results were decidely mixed some lovely shots and then some that to my eye seemed rather noisy. I have since retired that lens and upgraded to the new 100-400 and i have had the the same issues the images at low ISO 100-200 just look noisy not all of them however.

When i look at images that people with the same setup that i have post they look so much different im really unsure as to the best course of action, i am thinking about taking it back to Jessops and getting it looked at via Canon maybe i could exchange it???

Anybody else had a situation like this???

Apologies for the silly question but are you sure that all shots are at the same ISO? If some look ok and some don't, was it possible that you were using Auto ISO and the camera bumped it up for those shots?

Thanks for the replies ive definatley checked that auto ISO isnt on so thats not a problem maybe im just expecting to much, what with the new lens and new camera maybe i am just rusty.

When you imagine that something's wrong it's easy to start obsessing about it. Be analytical - explain your workflow. Nobody can help otherwise. Are you shooting raw? If so that's the file to examine, not downsized jpg's posted on-line.

Always shoot in RAW and only ever make minor tweaks in PS with contrast etc.. Then USM save as JPEG for then resize and USM for the smaller size. I think i'm may just leave it for now and get a bit more practice with it.

Nothing wrong with that shot except you were unlucky too have to shoot a grey plane against a grey sky. If that sky was blue the aircraft would have just popped.
Also regarding the close up crop of the aircraft where it does not look sharp, remember those old airplanes are not as rigid as modern aircraft, they vibrate like crazy in flight, maybe that apparent lack of sharpness explains the crop.
Remember that your camera\lens combo is not the sole determiner of sharpness, The subject you shoot, lighting conditions, weather conditions all have an effect on sharpness and apparent sharpness.

I don't think there is to much wrong with this. Everything seems in focus. So maybe look at dof and background. Looking at shutter speed at bit slow for my liking but if it works for you. The 7d2 is a light hungry so maybe a higher ISO. Enjoy this camera

Thanks for the advice guys i guess im just being picky and need more time to get used to my new gear. Cheers more practice needed.

raw will show more noise than jpg will

your pixel peeping.. always going to look bad :)

It took me years to stop pixel peeping.... But it's like a weight being lifted off of your shoulders when you do, and you look back and wonder why you did it in the first place.

I was thinking of trading my 6D for a 7D Mk2 but the noise issue i have read on other sites is kinda putting me off.:)

What were the settings of that image?

Well i think i am just considering a little change as i do now & again.:):D

I know what you mean,i love the 6D but the wife would have a fit if talked about a new camera as well as keeping the 6D.:D

I will have to ponder on this i think.:D
