Use to own a 5dii for many years, sadly it died just before Christmas.

As photography is just a hobby and I shoot anything and everything although landscapes and portrait are my main interests.

So, with all this in mind I couldn't justify the price tag of the Canon 5diii which would have been the natural replacement for my 5dii and ended up buying a Canon 7dii which I've now owned for a month.

It's a great camera but I'm not happy with the image's. Don't know why I'm just not. I'm even thinking that the problem is all in my head not the camera.

I'm actually thinking of going to my local camera shop today and buying the Canon 5d iii. Yes I'm going to lose a small fortune but what else can I do?
 
If you want it you may just have to do it rather than reason on it. Do you still use your FF lenses on the 7d? If you still have some good quality lenses then I'd do it, for landscape and portraits FF has a distinct advantage.

Consider an original 6d, it is a step up from a 5d2 and you should get one for the right money easily.

I know what you mean about the 7d2, image quality wise the shadows actually lift a lot cleaner than 5d2/3 but the highlights and colours are not as creamy smooth.

Or my standard answer to canon users in a dilemma looking for better iq at a reasonable cost is this; buy a Nikon d750.
 
Have you thought about buying a mint, low-mileage, used 6D with a longish warranty from a reputable shop/dealer instead? I doubt you'd see any difference in image quality between the 6D and the 5DIII and the 6D is slightly better in low light, plus it won't cost as much (probably around the £850 mark give or take £50) so your fortune shouldn't take as much of a hammering! Perhaps give one a try and see what you think?
 
My son has a 7D2 and it is a fine camera, I have a 5D3 and I prefer the images I get with mine, as often gets mentioned they just have a slightly different look/feel to them so I can understand why you want to get back to FF.
Trouble is that the 5D3 is a great camera, was when it came out and still is despite all of the newer cameras that have come to market. I said a couple of years ago that all of the previous generation top line cameras (5D3 etc) had reached a point where they were superb and only at the extremes did they show their age by comparison to the newer models.
You know you want a 5D3 and you wont be happy until you have one :-)
The 6D is also a great camera but the AF on the 5D3 is better and it may bug you that you could have had it's AF if you buy a 6D, I just feel the 5D3 is a better every day camera unless size and weight are an issue.

You could easily swap the 7d 2 for a mint used 6d.

You will get seriously financially done over if you try to get rid of the 7d 2 in a shop trade and buy a new 5d mk 3.
 
I can understand this. I had a 5diii and bought a 7dii for sports and wildlife. I also found it hard to explain, but I just didn't like the images as much and I ended up selling the 7dii to MPB. It sounds like a 6D might be a good move if you don't shoot action. They're lighter too.
 
Thank you all for your replies, it's helped me make my mind up, I'm going with a new 5diii.
Castle Camera's my local camera shop have one in stock reserved for me.

I did consider the 6d and the 6dii but I can't afford to make another mistake so sticking with what I know and like, the Canon 5d .

Quick update:

Went to Castle Cameras and walked out with nothing! Lol

Will take my time deciding and also consider buying used as well as looking at the 6d a little closer.

Once again thanks all for your advice.
 
Did you not like the 5D3?

Most certainly have. £1200 gets you a excellent condition with very low shutter count body only.

Buying a used FF will allow me to keep the 7d which would be nice in a way as I wiuld have the best of both worlds.

I'm seriously considering a 7d (mk2/3 - who knows) as I think it compliments the 5D3 really well.

I have a 7D2 and a 5D3 and love them both. If I am doing fast moving stuff the 7D2 cones out as the AF and FPS are both better than the 5D3, if I am doing slow moving or low-light the 5D3 comes out as the files are ultimately slightly better quality and the low -light performance much better. They are a great pair to have to cover almost any eventuality. The only gap is fast moving things in low light, but I can’t currently justify a 1DX2!
 
Do as I have, tried a 7D2 and did not like the results (as above) returned it to that well known HK exporter and bought a 5D3, love it and a great saving with 3 year warranty. LOL
 
I've kept my original 6D as I felt the 6Dii wasn't worth the money it would cost to change, plus performance at 100 ISO isn't meant to be as good, and as that's the base ISO that most people would choose for landscape and portrait shots (the main strengths of the 6D), then I couldn't see any logic in that. The original 6D might have less focus points and only one cross type one, but that cross type one works in very low light (I believe lower light than the 5Diii, but I'm sure an internet review would confirm that) and I've not had much trouble focusing on things with it. Besides, have a look how close together all those focus points are on the 6Dii and it doesn't seem to offer a massive improvement over the original 6D in terms of spread.

The 6D is better in low light than the 5Diii, and also features WiFi so you can talk to it with your smartphone (remote shutter release, etc.), the 6Dii has a flappy touch screen, which some people like but I've always seen these as a potential weak point and just something else that could break or go wrong with age (or be vulnerable to damage if dropped even from knee height) and render the camera useless or beyond economic repair as it gets older.

I think I'd still rather have a mint, used 5Diii (which to be honest is showing it's age spec-wise these days) if I had to chose between that and a 6Dii, but if I were in your shoes and was going to keep my 7Dii for fast action stuff, then I'd more than likely go for a mint, used original 6D (at around £300+ cheaper than a similar condition used 5Diii) to use along-side my 7Dii and wait until the 5D iv became more plentiful and cheaper second hand (probably in a year or so's time) then chop the 7Dii and 6D in against a mint used 5D iv when I could afford it.

Hope this (along with what the others have said) gives you some ideas to think about and helps you make the right move for you. (y)
