After being offered a 7D for a very reasonable sum i thought it rude to pass up the oppertunity. I had a very smooth sale transaction of my 50D and an even smoother purchase of a 7D from a nice honest lady.

It came with 800 clicks and it was minty fresh!

It feels so expensive and well put together - it feels as if its made for L glass only!

The shutter clicks with a gorgeous sound that makes you want to fire all day.

The viewfinder is lovely and the focus system is awesome

Im in love :D

How are you getting on with the focus selection system? Its alot more complicated than the x0D's isn't it!!
 
After having had the 7D for some months, I've just watched the 3 part B&H video on the 7d and its a very easy way of digesting some of the capabilities. Also shows some of the less obvious abilities.

Sounds like your chuffed with it Danny :thumbs:

Don't get too hung up on 'only' L glass though - with L lenses it's not just the build quality you're paying good money for but edge quality and unlike 5D or pro bodies - your 7D won't be utilising this.

Can't work out what's complex about it really .. It's alot better but wouldn't say it's complicated. I find it easier than the 50 as I have 19 points to choose from not 9 so it's more accurate :)
 
I like little touches like one button press the memorised focus points which changes automatically when you change landscape/portrait orientation. They're are small features, but they do speed things up.

I wouldn't say it's more accurate, you just have to focus/recompose less
 
I was actually about to buy a used 50d or 7d today but I decided I spent so much on my camera recently.
 
I'm having cereal for breakfast today. Later on I shall be taking the dog for a walk. I own a 7D.
 
Should that entitle me to post any random drivel in a thread, so long as I included some passing reference to the topic of the thread, no matter how insignificant to the thread participants...... or do I have that wrong? Is that privelege only reserved for people with fewer than 100 posts?

It seems that way - I too had noticed the posting pattern and was 'joining in' in a dry manner that was perhaps overlooked.

I used to own a 7D, it was good.
 
Not just me that noticed then!

I'm still in bed but I've never owned a 7d.
 
It's OK, grotty, I took your post the right way, and I appreciate that you took mine the right way too. :)

Maybe at some point the thread will return to containing useful information about the 7D rather than worthless personal trivia. I'll shut up now and give it a chance. :)
 
I was actually just about to start a new thread on these forums, but since there is one right here discussing the 7d, I would like to ask....

Why is everyone buying/obsessing over 7d's at the moment?

Every camera forum I frequent I see posts about people upgrading to the 7d. For sale threads and even ebay for sale items are plagued with peopel that have just bought or are about to buy a 7d. Can someone explain to me this camera's benefits over the XXd range? I just went to have a look at the specs and can only see minor things. I am in NO WAY being negative about the 7d and only ask out of pure interest. :) It just looks to me - as someone who has not researched it much as can not afford it admittedly - to be of little benefit over XXd series but for a lot more money. It's still 1.6 crop so perhaps I am msising something major. If the AF is so good...why is it good? In what way is it better?

Price has now dropped to below £1,000 and it is a terrific camera. Other than sensor size (and therefore IQ) it is remarkably close to a 1 series in performance and features. In fact, in features it is ahead of even the 1D4, I think. In IQ it's not quite there, compared to the 1D4, but it is 1/3 the price and at the wide end the lenses are cheaper than those for a 1D4 and at the long end the camera gets more pixels on your subject than the 1D4.

The camera is supported by twin DIGIC 4 chips, with one dedicated just to the AF functionality, meaning it can handle AF calculations faster and with more data to sift from. There are more AF points, more ways to configure the AF and every AF point is a cross sensitive type with f/5.6 and faster lenses.

If the 7D had been available at the time I bought my 1D3 I would never have bought the 1D3. The 7D's AF system was the main ingredient missing from the xxD bodies. The 7D fixed that and piled on other useful features in spades.

FWIW I started with a 30D and have since bought a 40D, 50D, 1D3, 7D and 5D2. I still use the three most recent cameras regularly. I've sold the 50D and the 30D and 40D are boxed up and waiting to be sold.

Nikon's D300s replacement had better best the 7D, or I won't be happy :(
 
What Tim said really. Its arguably the best crop sensor camera out there right now in
terms of IQ, and features. From what I've read it seems a very competent camera from a technical viewpoint.

I see lots of 40D owners upgrading, especially those who weren't impressed with the 50D, now the 60D is out and they don't like that either they see the 7D as the logical successor to the 40D.

I'm yet another one considering it, given the extra features over a 60D you may as well spend the extra, especially if you do sports/wildlife.

Why worry about it? Camera bodies come and go as technology marches on. Glass is where the investment really counts. That's the long game.

Yeah 100% glass is the key investment, but why not have the best body you can afford to go with it? :thumbs:

That's what I did. My 40D was great but lacked in the AF and also higher ISO department (don't get me wrong a correctly exposed image at iso 1600 was still usable with good noise reduction). What canon have done with the 7D is fix these things and add a few more in! Mine only came on Wednesday so I haven't had any photography time but even just looking through the viewfinder (its just so large, bright and clear!) lets me know I have done the right thing.

Well Tim's touched on most of the important bits, but the 7D was a complete clean sheet project from the ground up, and features a completely new viewfinder, new metering system, new shutter design, highly advanced AF system, high levels of weather proofing. remote flash capablliity built into the camera with the ability to control multiple flash guns, a built in level indicator, which renders every fluid level in a tripod head obsolete (and which will inevitably be copied by other manufacturers). The 7D is completely different to anything else in the Canon range, and IMHO is arguably the best camera Canon have produced in years- there's nothing else out there currently that I'd want to replace it with.

At the prices it's currently going for the 7D is a bargain!

The only reason I paid specific attention to the AF side of things was to answer that specific question posed by clicktor. But yes, I agree there's lots more to the 7D than just the new AF system. :thumbs:

LOL - indeedy Tim.:)

I think the 1 Series needs a ground -up rethink with the same approach they took to the 7D design. I've got a gut feeling that's exactly what we'll be seeing in the next generation 1 Series models.
 
I can't tell you what you'll find in this extensive thread, but there are definitely some nice examples of what the 7D can do in the right hands. I do fear there may be examples of what it can do in the wrong hands too, but it is hard to fake good results, so enjoy those and ignore the muppet shots (which might include some of my own)....

Too much time on my hands, and a thirst for knowledge. I like to make (very) informed decisions, especially when it comes to parting with money.
 
I use a 1DIV and 7D regularly and in good light, I will often pick the 7D as it is lighter and the AF system is more flexible. It is the best APS-C camera Canon have ever made and it got me back into smaller sensor cameras (having used 1D/1Ds/5D for a number of years).

Just to clarify - the 7D has, indeed got two Digic 4 processors. In addition to those it has another, separate, processor dedicated to AF functionality. A lot of people on the interwebs have somehow got the idea that the AF functionality is handled by the Digic chips.

Well that's embarrassing. I'll obviously have to brush up on my knowledge before I go spouting off again. Quoting from this page - http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E7D/E7DA.HTM....

For the first time on a non-1D EOS camera, Canon has dedicated two separate processors to Autofocus and A/D conversion, despite the extra power offered by the two DIGIC 4 processors. So Autofocus is not hampered by any work the DIGIC 4 processors are doing to remove noise from the captured images, nor is the Analog-to-digital conversion.

Like I said, that particular bit of misinformation seems to have spread all over the interwebs, so I wouldn't feel too embarassed. I think it was a RoyC posting that pointed me to the correct info.
 
Those two processors must be what let it shift 14bit 18mp RAW files at 8 frames per second :nuts:
