Canon 7D to 5DMKII

Fantastic picture I never been able to put 3 images like that together smootly

5D2 is about 1 stop better than the 7D for ISO noise (that is 400 on 5D2 will look like 200 on 7D). Both go to 3200 on auto ISO. I've used and kept shots at 6400 on the 5D2. Don't think I'd do that on the 7D often.

For a well exposed image, image quality is determined by sensor size. I.e. bigger the sensor, better the image - 5D2 wins there.

7d focusing is only advantageous if the subject is moving - the 5D2 is fine for static subjects - and takes some getting used to (as my g/f found out the other day taking some snaps - the wrong things were in focus as she was on auto 19 point).

5D3 should be around the corner, but with the tsunami in Japan, no one knows when. If the 5D3 has a similar AF system to the 7D, I'll be upgrading...

I'm in agreement with your points, especially if a 5D3 is going to get a 7d af system. I've been a 7d user for a long time now, but I've only had my 5d mkII less than a week. the 5d is going to get used more as it is better at high ISO and has exceptional image quality.

Don't get me wrong, the 7d is amazing. Setting the camera to manual, shutter speed and aperture selected, then auto ISO on and a nice fast lens has seen me grab hundreds if great shots of my, now, 3 and 5 year old. Granted indoors the iso tops 3200 and if the exposure is spot on then that will not be a problem. If you have a 7d you are spoiled for the autofocus, it is so quick.

Now the 5d mkII autofocus ain't bad, you just notice it is slower than the 7d cos that is on acid or something, its that good. The images from the 5d mkII make you want to drool.

I've never had a problem with landscape or children images from my 7d, but in the very early 5d mkII days I imagine the 5d is going to be better for me.

After doing a bit of reading might try a d700 if it best of both world

But whats lens are as good as I got

Canon 14-40 L
Canon 70-200 F4 L
Canon 24-105 IS L
Canon 100mm F2.8 IS L

the d700 is awsome, it has a ruddy awsome af and is great for high iso, but as you have some decent canon glass it doesnt really make sense, but by all means try one and you will wont one.

I never knew it did that! The 5D2 is fully manual in M mode (the ISO is set at 400 if you choose Auto ISO). This is really stupid IMHO.

I think that why 7d good as the auto iso on it works great

I was shooting in a studio so had control over the background. It made it easier.

Yeah it is an amazing feature on the 7d imo. But its newer than the 5d so maybe thats why it has it and the 5d can only go to 400.

If you have the 5D2 in auto ISO, once you switch to M, the ISO is set to 400. It doesn't change. M is FULL manual, whereas it should be exactly the same as the 7D implementation IMHO (and they've updated the s/w enough on the 5D2)

nikon in manual you can set the iso to go from base iso to as high as you want in auto ie (100-12800 or 400-800 or 100-400 what ever you select), and you select the apature and shutter the camera will select the riht iso.

Yes, I know :( I think the 60D will have this too as it was later than the 7D and has Auto ISO limit function.

So what does auto iso on 7d start at?

are those the settings on the camera or on the flash?

That picture is how I like try get it with the flash but am always over bright...

Grrrrr 7d or 5D ha ha ha ha wish I has the money for both.. the 40D will be up for sale soon it a great camera the 40D i got some cracking images from it dont get me wrong

Try a Gary fong defuser
it works wonders

I tried earlier to take a picture in a low light room and the lens as hunting could not get a focus even the ISO at 1600 on the 40D and my friend said if it was the 7D it would of took it no problem but I need proof this is the case but he could not come to show us as he lives quite far....

Driving me nut this is....

70-200 isn't that long for motorsport, but it depends where you go.
Portrait and landscape I'd say 5D everytime. The 5D mk2 is just stunning in the studio.

40D does OK though as I said with enough light. This is with a single 500W bowens flash in a softbox to the front left
1/125th f9, ISO 100

was that image edited in any ways?

The lens I was using and it the lens I like to be able to use but I bet I am not able tooo

Canon 100mm F2.8 IS L Macro...

Shot in raw straight out of camera more or less. Imported into lightroom but just checked and there's no adjustments. BUT it shot with a 500w bowens flash with a soft box, so lots of controllable light.

It can be normal for a lens to hunt in very low light, so either use a torch to help with focussing and fix the focus or use a contrast edge, something light to dark helps.

Which lens and an example of how dark would help, either a pic or settings

should be no reason whyyou can not. what focus mode was you using and was you using the af assist light.

I was using centre spot focus and no flash so how do we get af assist light to work without flash?

forgot the 40d uses flash as asist, only way to pop it up and put it down, but you do have a eternal flash, so try using that and bouncing the flash of the ceiling iso 200 to 400, f5 shutter speed 160th and once you know wht iso you need for subjects in different places you will be alot happier.
give it a try, you wont regret it.

No, the sensible thing is to get a D700 which does both jobs. :)

Not with the investment in Caonon glass already made, plus the crop factor extends lenses reach. Add a FF 5Dmkii and it's like having twice as many lenses for the cost of one:D

Guys I am now proud owner of a 7d it a fantastic camera I have never felt so much in control images are all coming out fantastic. Going put money in a kitty weekly till a 5d mkiii comes then I get one for the FF factor.
