I have a fullframe & crop camera. Which to chose between 7D and 70-200 2.8 IS lens.I believe the 7D has good noise control so could shoot at high ISO without noise. So this may be good with my current canon 70-200 f4 set at around ISO640/1000. Alternatively I could get a canon 70-200 2.8 IS and have a reundant f4 lens. 7D is slightly more expensive. This is for a friends wedding in a few months. Think I know the answer to this but interested in your views please. Thanks

Lens wins for me here.
What cameras you shoot with?

Canon 5D Mk1 & 50D. Assortment of lenses 17-40L f4, 70-200L f4, 50mm 1.4. 85mm 1.8

Buy the 7D AND the 70-200 IS L, so you get the best of both worlds, and sell the 70-200 f4.
Use a credit card :D
I have the 70-200 f2.8L IS and it's great, very sharp. How much do you think you'd get for the f4?

Bit pricey for both. Canon f4 probably get around the £300 mk, no px facilities in NIreland (no London Camera Exchange) . If I purchased the 2.8 IS likely use it on the 5D Mk1

you'd get more for the 70-200mm f/4 on here

you'd get more for the 70-200mm f/4 on here

Totally Agree.

Sell the 50D and the F4 and buy the 7D and the F2.8 IS :D

My thoughts would be that for a wedding you will use the 5D surely?

Therfore buy the f2.8 sell the f4 on here and maybe the 50D and then save up for a 7D in the future??

Have been to handle 70-200 2.8L IS at calumet this afternoon. Beautiful and not as heavy as I thought. Staff said that they had only sold 2 7Ds but lots of 5Ds MkII. £1600 is a bit heavy at this shop when you can get the lens on ebay for £1189. Likely get this lens when prices drop after the release of Mk2 version priced at about £1700. Anybody used photodirect on ebay for transactions, there prices seem too good or use talkphotography favourite - Kerso.

I'd go for the lens too, in fact I want one too, so I hope the prices drop a little when the mk2 arrives

I agree as well, get the lens first and change to the 7D later (the price might even be lower for the camera body, the lens price will probably be the same or even higher).

If i could justify it I would buy the 70-200 2.8L tomorrow as it's fast enough to 2X TC it to a 'AF' @ 400mm

Why not wait for the 70-200 f2.8L IS II (due out very soon) although expenive likely!

GLASS GLASS GLASS !! Bit surprised you're not thinking 24-70 2.8 on the FF for a wedding.

Get the lens and also a Sigma 24-70 F2.8

You've got a 50d and a 5d both are capable cameras.

Glass every time would win for me. 70-200 might be a little long though? You'll need wider for the group shots.
If you're doing a wedding, got a decent flashgun?

Thanks for all your comments. Think I had already decided on the 2.8L IS 70-200 for candid isolated shots. Have the 24-70L 2.8 & 85 1.8, 50 1.4, 17-40L and even a sigma 10-20. The Mk II 70-200 out of my price range. Have 480x flash to use when necessary. I'm not keen on video so the 7D or even 5D MkII features would possibly be an extra cost that wouldn't be used, I say now.

Nice set of lenses there. Similar to mine - You will not regret buying the 70-200. A superb lens and one of my most used.

Oops went and bought the Canon 5D Mk II instead. I have plently of lenses and now 3 cameras. Get the 2.8 IS later when there are a surplus of 2nd hand ones following the release of the Mk II version.

Ok, so now sell the 5D (£800ish) and the 70-200 F4 (£400ish) and get your 70-200 F2.8 IS (£1200ish). Job done.

P.s. I like that you went in for a lens and got a camera you weren't even thinking about before :)
