Hi ,
I currently have a 1D mk2 , but find that the ISO range is a bit limiting in low light for early morning or dusk wildlife. even with120-300 at 2.8
Now with a new 7D or second hand mk3 both around £1100 , who has experience of either and which way should I jump or should I stick with what I have ?

I had both and I found image quality on the mark iii better and focussing better. I didn't need video and liked having water sealing so kept the mark iii.

Both great cameras though.

Also preferred the feel of the mark iii.

I have both cameras and I would say there is no outright winner. The 7D can turn in fine results if you use it with due consideration. You can't shoot at high ISO and make big crops from tiny pixels and expect gold. With the 1D3 you don't have tiny pixels so you don't have the option to do stupid things like that and then complain.

But at very low ISO the 7D is going to put way more pixels on your subject, giving you the potential for significantly more "reach". Just don't take the pi55 with big crops at higher ISOs.

The 7D completely outspecs the 1D3 in several areas and I prefer the ergonomics and speed of adjustment to the AF system. The 1D3 outspecs the 7D in outright shooting speed, build and a certain richness to the images, moreso if you can fill the frame.

I've shot with both camera at up to 3200 ISO and been happy with the results. With the 7D I've shot at 6400 ISO and got IMAGES which look fine, although the individual PIXELS look very ropey underneath. I've not used the 1D3 at 6400.

If I could only keep one of the cameras I would seriously struggle to choose which one to keep. If I could usually fill the frame of the 1D3 (not focal length limited) then I think I'd go with that. If I was badly focal length limited and would more often than not have to crop even from an APS-C sensor then I think I'd go for the 7D. As far as I'm concerned I find the amount of silicon you can use to be more important than the number of pixels that silicon is divided into.

Of course there are other considerations - size and weight - for which there are pros and cons to both cameras, sync speed, build and weatherproofing, lens range available - EF-s means you can go wider with the 7D than the 1D3.

At the end of the day, both cameras are great and neither should be a disappointment. You just need to figure out which features are of most value to you.

thanks for the replies , it was a gut feeling that the mark iii would be the preference , certainly felt better in my hands but I am still on the steep learning curve - downwards most days

cheers
