Canon 7D mk2 owners thread.

Mine wasn't an affected as it had Version 1.1.1 installed already.

This is Brilliant on iPad and iPhone, a lot of adjustments can be made, including WB, Continuous shooting, Shutter speed, ISO, Auto focus and Firing the shutter.

Obviously you have to install the Canon app.
 
Not been on for a while but hoping you guy's can help. Have recently upgraded from 70d to 7d mk2. Has anyone on here done the same or even has both cameras, I have both and am using 70-200 L 2.8 ii, I'm finding that with the same lens and same settings ie: shutter speed/ iso / center metering / F stop the 7d mk2 image is noticeably lighter.
I'm metering on the same part of the image, but in bright sunlight it's just to light and even having to -3v exposure comp to get any detail.

Anybody else had this experience, is it just a case of shooting differently to the 70d ?

Centre metering might be the problem, try spot metering don't know what Aperture, ISO, etc you're using.

All sorted, tried a friends 70-200 2.8 L lens and all ok. Now to send lens off for service.

At least I know the camera is ok, can start enjoying it now.

....I see that your problem has now been sorted but I moved from the 70D to the 7D2 and have used both for lots and lots and lots of exclusively wildlife shots.

I loved my 70D, sold to a friend, but for wildlife the 7D2 features and customising options have the edge. The 7D2 is also a lot more weather resistant! I had rain problems (temporary fortunately) with my 70D. I did miss its articulated screen though... until I added an EOS M5 to my kit.

The 7D2 is thirstier on battery juice so a Battery Grip makes all the difference and also improves the handling with a telephoto lens mounted.

I have my GPS permanently turned off but my 7D2 still drinks battery juice. Focus tracking moving subjects and also chimping drinks juice. However, it's not really a problem with a battery grip and a spare battery in a pocket.
 
I agree, the only time I get more battery life is when constantly shooting pictures, walking around and shooting far more relaxed it uses more juice, just keep a 2nd battery with me now. Off to cosford tomorrow so will be interesting to see how it does this time around.

Just wondering, how do you guys find the MKii noise performance? I have a Mki and it's noisy, grainy poo, particularly with shadow areas and skies. I am considering upgrading to a Mkii or the 6DMkii, when it comes.

Compared to the 7D1, the 7D2 is cleaner and also the noise is more benign. It's still there though, esp above 3200 but it is easier to handle. I found the noise on the 7D1 to be more blotchy and with some banding.

There is noise when you boost the shadows at lower iso's.

On a battery note at Cosford one battery lasted for around 1350 pictures
 
When I connect the camera over USB to download the pics whilst the Wifi W-E1 adapter is inside the body the WIN10 laptop does not detect the camera at all.

Immediately after ejecting the W-E1 the laptop detects the camera.

Anyone else had this problem?

The camera cannot be connected via wi-fi and a cable at the same time, it is either one or the other.
See page 84 of the W-E1 user manual.
 
Can anyone who mounts Canon super-telephoto lenses on their 7D2 help, please? ....

Canon's super-telephoto lenses have a feature which allows you to push a 'SET' button on the side of the lens to memorise and use a AF preset distance. However, when mounted on my gimbal head this 'SET' button is not easily accessible when the camera is in the usual landscape orientation.

On a black rubber ring towards the front of a super-telephoto lens (mine is a 500mm F/4L II) there are 4 buttons called 'AF STOP'. I would like to assign the 'AF STOP' buttons to the preset focus 'SET' action but don't understand which option to select in the 7D2 Customise menu.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks :)

Hi Robin

I don't think you can do that Robin. There is no option for it in the custom control menu. Is it the gimbal head getting in the way or do you just find the position of the button awkward?

I try to use monopods and tripods as much as possible. Especially on static subjects you can use ISO 100 in the dark

Yes, the gimbal head's vertical part of the "L" bracket physically gets in the way unless I loosen the clamp and slide the 500mm forwards or backwards which then upsets the overall balance, or if I loosen the tripod lens collar and rotate the lens. Neither of these workarounds are satisfactory and it's more likely to be when shooting from a tripod that it's useful to have the option to SET the AF distance.

I'll check if any of the other customisable buttons will action SET such as the Preview button for example.

This isn't a problem when mounted on a monopod (with RRS arca-swiss clamp) or when handheld but the Set preset AF distance will be less accurate due to movement.

I know that this is going to sound like stating the obvious but when I wanted to try the focus preset button to see if I had any use for it I turned the gimbal round the other way so the arm is on the right of the lens.

....I did think of doing that but haven't tried it in the field but only at home - I find it more natural to use my left hand to adjust or lock down the 'vertical' sweep of the lens on the gimbal while my right hand grips the shutter button and back-button-focus side.

Using my left hand for that vertical adjustment becomes even more important because it's also my left hand which works best on the RRS head on my monopod. In fact I would lose many shots by being restricted to use only my right hand for both shutter and vertical sweep (hopefully my description makes sense!).

I would rather sacrifice the AF preset feature than have opposite muscle-memory actions to deal with between tripod and monopod.

Maybe not for you then Robin. I never lock my gimbal head down so it's not an issue for me.

....If I am staking out an animal/bird which keeps returning to the same position/branch I will occasionally lock my gimbal head down vertically but often not on the horizontal panning. Obviously I lock down everything tightly if carrying on my shoulder on walkabout wildlife shoots.

It really helps stability to lock down when shooting from my monopod and importantly using my left hand for this.

I'm thinking that if setting a preset AF is important I probably have time to loosen the lens collar to then reach the SET button.

Do you use the preset SET feature much, Gary?
 
No I don't Robin. I found that by the time I swung the camera back, found and pressed the button I could refocus the camera just as quickly.

I think it's one of those things that if you use it a lot it has an advantage but, using it infrequently it becomes a conscious task instead of an automatic one.
 
Aha Richard, do I see that someone else now has the 400 DO mk2?

I've been using mine for a couple of years now and it's a great lens, even with extenders, but pricey.

Canon don't seem to push it at all, can't understand why.

Hi George,

You are correct bought this year to replace the new 100-400L MkII lens as I was using the long end more.

Wanted the DO Lens for the relative small dimensions and weight. It does go well with extenders as you say I have the mkIII 1.4 can't ever see me ever Selling it as it's so Good. Very pricey but in the long term a Sound investment, one of those things that makes you smile every time you pick it up and use it. Hope you feel the same way as I do.

Yup, a great investment, I use mine a lot with a 1.4 mk3 ...so I have a light 560mm f 5.6 and with the 1Dx mk2 I still have alll focusing points active even at 800mm f8.

Sorry for a brief thread diversion.......
 
Had an Invasion of Flying Ants today, you can just see the Wing of one in the first Birds beak, with some of the Body as well in the second Birds beak.

Turn the Gimbal around so that the vertical support is on your right when viewed from the rear (where you stand).. This leaves all controls fully accessible to your left hand. Hope this makes sense! I quickly learned that the "normal" way people set up Gimbal heads is a pain in this respect!

Had an error 70 display today when my camera seized, anyone had issues with this error code? I'm on holiday at the moment and with limited Internet. I assume it's something specific as it displayed the error code.

Description: A malfunction with the images has been detected.

Resolution: Turn the power off, then remove and re-install the battery. Then turn the power on again

Altogether not enough photos on this thread considering how many of us must have 7Dmkii's. The more I use this camera the more I love it.
