Hiya folks - don't often post in the gear forums, as, well - basically I don't really care about hardware until it goes wrong. But, probalby by being left discharged and unused for yonks, my 2 "spare" non-original LP-E6 batteries are just refusing to charge in the Canon charging brick - the 2 originals which are maybe a month older than the other 2 are fine, so the chargers okay.

I'm just guessing here, but my money is on the "pattern" parts having lost whatever "chip" info is onboard - they begin to charge, the lights flash for 10 seconds or so, then charger says "no way pedro".

Now, considering I've not really used the camera in anger for ages, I could just say fine, and stick with the 2 originals - but if I go away for a few days away from chargers, I don't want the only 2 batteries to die on me.

So, if any "digital antique enthusiasts" can help me? - aftermarket batteries that'll work in the Original Canon Charger, Have all the chips onboard to report charge cycles remaining et al - and are good with the original, Mark 1 canon 7D - oh, and as well as that "moon on a stick" can you suggest somewhere where the batterys aren't just cheap clones that burst into flames on the second charge.

The LP-E6 one I have dates back to 2011/12 and has outlasted the Canon one in the EOS60D
 
Maybe not the most cost effective solution (for my 7Dmk2 in the short term at least), but it's a strategy I embraced with my 7Dmk1 and mk2...and I've never looked back...and that is the battery grip with 6 X Eneloop AA NiMh 2500mAh in the AA carrier.

I found a used mk2 grip from Wex, for around £100...(they're ~£220 new! - the mk1 grip is considerably cheaper, but only available used nowadays of course), and 4 X Eneloop 2500mAh AAs cost about £12 from Amazon....I bought three sets to have two sets of 6.

I have found that they are really excellent, and last a good deal longer than 2 X genuine (admittedly rather elderly) Canon LP-E6N batteries in the same grip!
I usually take my Canon batteries as backups, and have a spare set of Eneloops too - more than enough for several days solid shooting....which I never do anyway!
For high burst rates, they can be a little sluggish, but other than that, they work flawlessly!

I would definitely recommend a genuine battery grip - (BG-E7 for the 7Dmk1) - steer clear of the clones... they're pants!
They're all over eBay etc....ranging from a tenner to fifty quid.

So, in summary, a grip for a 7Dmk1 at say £20 or £30 (decent condition, used...I think I paid £40 for my used mk1 version from Wex a few years ago), and three sets of Eneloop AAs, all in for about £50 or £60.
That's around twenty quid cheaper than one genuine Canon LP-E6N!
Though of course you'll need to factor in the cost of a AA charger as well...if you don't already have one that is.

The only downside is the extra weight, but I never leave the house without mine now!

hmm - interesting thought - as I've already got the original BG-E7, I guess it's certainly an option.... To be honest, it's more for being "out and about" over a period of a week or so sans mains recharging, so i'm slightly loth to add the extra weight and bulk of the grip for shlepping up and down mountains - but it's a "get out of jail free" option that i'd forgotten about.

Ideally, i just want 2 more spare batteries - thing is last time I used the camera in anger was at the Cycling Worlds up in Yorkshire this September, and used about 1/2 charge on a afternoons shooting - though, as that was upwards of 250 images, that'd probably see me through a fortnights holiday on landscape/walking stuff... it's just that the pattern ones have died, and I'm slightly worried that the (older) canon one's are going to head the same way if I start using them on a regular basis again.

I have both canon and third party LP-E6 batteries and IMO the third parties batteries last apx 25% - 30% less than the canon ones. To date i have had 'supposedly' genuine canon batter fail. I say supposedly as it had Japanese or Chinese writing on the back.
 
I have had the 7d since when it was first released and in addition to the supplied Canon battery, I purchased a couple of unbranded spares from 7dayshop.com. The three batteries had equal usage and the Canon one packed up a few years ago and the two unbranded are still going strong and so far haven't caught fire :). I am not sure if 7day still supply them but obviously there are some good unbranded batteries on the market.
 
I though the trick was to tape over the end of the battery, opposite end from the contacts? Are the ends of the batteries the same?
