Yes
I play league cricket up in here in Yorkshire and usually take a few snaps whilst we are batting each week for the clubs website and facebook page.

This year however i'm thinking of taking the DSLR with me to games with the above lens to try and get some better quality photos than the point and shoot i have been using.

As a result i have the following questions for those more in the know than me :bang:

1. Would the above lens be suitable
2. shutter speed needed
3. would i benefit from using a tripod (i'm guessing yes!)
4. Generally any other advice re settings etc

Thanks in advance for your advice

Regards
Simon

I think that would be an acceptable lens on a 500D for league cricket.
That lens is very light and at the speeds you will be shooting there is really no need for a tripod. As James said, speeds of around 1/1000 should freeze the action nicely.

You should get better photo`s with 75-300 on your 500D than you have been getting with the point & shoot. You will know the distance of the wicket from the rope so that will give you a idea to start for zoom.Try a monopod rather than trypod.

Sorry for the late reply!!

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice given it's really appreciated!!

Thanks again
Simon
