Hi All..

I've picked up a second hand Canon 75-300 IS USM for £269.

However, I've been quoted the following prices elsewhere.
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM £135
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM £339

Both are new... so have I been ripped off as I could have got the Canon 70-300 IS for cheaper.

What's the difference between the two, and does the Canon 75-300 IS definitely come with Image Stabilisation? Because I'm taking it to South Africa!

Thanks,
Amnesia

Where did you get these numbers from they look reversed?

You have confusing info on there 3 different lenses:
- Canon 75-300 IS USM -> is the older version of the 70-300 IS USM and is not very good for IQ. Not made anymore. Dont buy one.
- Canon 70-300 IS USM -> is the one you want (as you have)
- Canon 75-30 III USM -> non IS version of the first lens, should far cheaper than either of the other 2

From warehouse express..

EF75-300mm f4.0-5.6 III £129 -> the "cheap" option
EF75-300mm f4.0-5.6 III USM £175 -> as above with faster focusing
EF70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM £365 -> better all round with IS
.
.
.
EF70-300mm f4.5-5.6 DO IS USM £775 -> completely different beastie as has Diffractive Optics... its almost an L series in disguise.

What you really want is:

EF70-200 f2.8 L IS USM + 2xEF for a mere £1300 ish

Well, I certainly can't afford £1300 lol.

I'm confused as to which lens I have purchased then.

On the MPB Photographic website last night, it advertised "Canon 75-300 IS USM f4.5/f5.6" for £269.

This is the one I purchased. It will arrive tomorrow. But by the look of things, there isn't a 75-300mm IS ...

So, you would say the 70-300mm IS is a better Lens?
Hmm... I knew I should have gone with it lol.

From what I remember the 75-300IS is 2 stop compensation with no tripod sensing,
the 70-300IS is 3stop + tripod sensing

IMHO ....
If you have bought the 75-300IS I'd send it back begging forgiveness :notworthy: and upgrade to the 70-300IS.

Okay... Thanks.

I can get the 70-300 for £320 delivered.

Thats a good price! I paid £339 collected from Kerso last week. Dont forget there is also £33 rebate available via Canon on this lens

The 70-300 for £320 will be second hand.

When you say £33 rebate... what's that mean?! lol.

Also - Does it come with lens hood and caps and warranty?

The 70-300IS f4-5.6 USm can be had new for £353, although The stores that offer it at that price seem to be out of stock, so maybe a more realistic price is around £365 from abc - http://www.abc-digital-cameras.co.uk/p2994-canon-ef-70-300mm-f4-5_6-is-usm.htm

The rebate is a mail in rebate (cash back) of £33 on this lens and its available by filling out a form and sending it off to canon together with the barcode from the box, details here - http://canonlensacc2007.onlinerebates.com/intro.aspx

I'd get in touch with Kerso, either via his ebay store "Flash Camera" or via these forums, he's a sound bloke and should be able to sort you out. I did and collected the lens direct which cost me £346 inc paypal fee's so after the rebate the lens will cost me £313 new. If you want a lens hood, they are extra, I think none canon ones are about £15 on the bay, genuine canon ones are more.

Thanks for your feedback.

I can get this camera second hand (only 6 weeks old) for £320 (delivered) which comes with a lens hood and filter.

Urm :( . I had one and sold it as was never happy with the end result.
Its the older version of the 70-300 IS, which is a better lens

That said it will do the job.

Not being funny but you must have had a dud copy then, most of the reviews I read found the 75-300 IS very sharp (upto around 200) and only softish at full zoom. There is said to be not a huge diference IQ wise between the 70-200L and the 75-200 range on the 75-300 IS. The 70-300 IS is a better lens of course but the only difference is the updated IS and the extra sharpness at the 300mm end.

Don't get the 75-300 USM IS confused with the standard 75-300 III, there is a lot of difference in IQ between the two.:)

Well I've gone and got the 70-300 IS and got rid of the 75-300 :)
