Canon 70D prices dropping...

I'm glad I didn't bother waiting. Am I'm glad I didn't bother going for a 60D.

Mine only cost £60 as I traded in a 7D and other gear to get it. I was on the priority list at L.C.E. in Lincoln and got mine on 22nd August. I'm very happy to have paid the full price as compared to the 7D I exchanged it's fantastic. If I'd been making a cash buy I'd still of gone for it for release date, but maybe to another online seller that wasn't quite as expensive. I still can't get over how good the 70D really is, it's getting waaaay more use than my 7D ever did.

How come you changed to the 70d ?

All I can see different betweeen the 70d and the 7d, is, 2 megapixel and processor is Digic 5+

seems a lot of us have sold our 7d's and bought the 70d and are extremely happy
I much prefer my 70d over the 7d's I had

plan on getting another dslr next year so do most think the 70d is better than the 7d?

I'm waiting to see if they bring out a 7D mk2 before I make the final decision on 7 or 70 (i'm also tempted to pick up a second user 60D instead now the price has been depressed)

No ones really answered the question of why they moved over from 7D to 70D, Is it image quality, ISO you wanted it for video?
I'm genuinely interested as I have a 7D :)

I had 2 7d's and despite their excellent technical specification it was difficult to get consistent results
The 70d has a far higher keeper rate without the drama for me

How come you changed to the 70d ?

Yes, my thoughts exactly.

The 7D was so frustrating for me, at anything over ISO1600 it just wasn't worth taking as it was so noisy. I take a lot of wildlife shots and with the 7D I couldn't get a high enough shutter speed to freeze the animals so lots of them were either blurred or too noisy. The 70D can still get decent shots up to ISO6400, albeit they are quite noisy but less noisy than my 7d was at 1600. My 7D also had some exposure issues, if I was taking some Manual shots in a constantly well lit room I would get an occasional too dark or too bright photo in the middle of a shoot. Don't get me wrong, the 7d is an excellent camera and takes excellent shots but the 1 I had was just too unforgiving in anything other than perfect conditions. Before everybody shouts 'user error' I have had 8 bodies altogether and the only ones I've had the same problems with are the two 7D's I had. I swapped a 60D for the second 7D, primarily for the better AF system and MFA ability, but regretted it, I found the photos SOOC of the 60D to be far better even though they were from the same sensor. I wanted a hybrid of the 7D's excellent AF system and fps and the 60D's ISO ability/noise handling, IQ and articulating screen. With the 70D I get all that and a touchscreen and excellent video features as well.

I have said it before in the thread and I'll repeat it now, "The 70D is the best crop body I've had or used and that includes a 1D3". I'd recommend the 70D to anyone and I rate it much more highly than either of the 7D's I've had, I'd also add that I've had a 5D2 and a 5D3 full frame cameras and TBH for anyone wanting to shoot 'all types of photos' I recommend the 70D instead of a 5D2 as IMO it's a better allrounder than the 5D2. For someone wanting to primarily shoot portraits, weddings and similar the 5D2 might be a wiser investment. I don't think it would be fair to really compare the 70D to a 5D3 as the 5D3 is really a different class of camera, but it is around a £1000 more expensive.

This shot was taken in a very dull woods and was taken wide open with a Sigma 150-500 OS wide open at f6.3, with a shutter speed of 1/4000sec to get to the ISO6400 setting I wanted to try to see how much detail it retained. There's no PP on the shot apart from the jpeg settings in camera and although it's quite noisy there's still a lot of detail in the dogs fur and using something like Elements 11 and shooting raw I could get it a lot better I'm sure.

Although I havent used a 70D yet I can agree with what people above are saying about the 7D. I find I have a love/hate relationship with it lol When conditions are good it can come out with some great shots, but in anything less than perfect conditions I find images tend to come out noisy/grainy. I have never been 100% truly happy with it and have always said the IQ from the 550D before it has always been better. Just as I make up my mind to sell it I get a few decent shots and decide I like it again and keep it lol

It's good to get a long time users opinion instead of the 1 week ownership reviews of some photo sites. Thanks for your input :)

My 450d is on ebay, so fingers crossed I should be ordering a 70d next weekend :)
