Canon 70D headphone monitoring

I see there are a few different option to monitor audio on the 70D, but the one I've opted for is taking a feed out of the AV out then using the standard usb to AV cable. The guides online suggest going into a little Fiio A1 headphone amp then out to the headphones.

Why would I need a headphone amp? Could I just no go into a RCA to female mini-jack connector then plug the headphones into that?

How is everyone else doing it?
 
Depends on how it all works.

USB does not usually carry analogue audio, so there's a bodge been made somewhere. Then it depends on whether the level is high enough to drive the phones.

It might not be USB, it's the AV out that you either hook up to the computer via USB but also with the use of the yellow, red, white cable that you hook up to the TV. Same output, different cables.

Thinking about t it, it would be the TV's amp that would power the speakers so maybe I do need a headphone amp to power the headphones.

OK, I haven't looked at magic lantern yet but I understand it's installed onto the memory card and runs on top of the Canon's software.

I just assumed that as it was the AV out then the cable picks up the audio regardless, so no need for magic lantern.
 
I thought it wasn't available - the main screen says the 70D is in progress but when I've looked on the forums it seems people are using it.

Nice choice! I think I like the look of these bad boys but I'll have to read up a little.

I do have the tascam dr05 but it's nice to keep in your pocket to record the audio direct into a lav mic. I think I could get a zoom h1, plug the mic directly into that then a line out to the camera and one for the headphones. That's the thing, the headphone amps are £25 and you get a used zoom for £50.

Yes, I think I'll rethink my options too!
 
I got some cables sent through but the splitter cable is shagged before I even start.

I took a feed from the Rode Videomic Pro, into the Tascam DR-05 then put the splitter cable on the mic/lineout and although I could monitor the audio OK the signal was super hot.

The 70D was set to 1 click from the left and the Tascam line level was on 1, and the Rode on -10db yet the signal was still peaking into the yellows.

What am I doing wrong?
