I own a canon 400d & 55-250 IS lens and want to improve my photos, I use it mainly for motor racing/Air shows , so would I be best upgrading my camera body to the 700d(5fps burst) against my current canon 400d(3fps), or the extra range of the 70-300mm IS?

Personally I would look at a second hand 50D if you are thinking of upgrading your body.
They do 6.3fps and can be picked up for a little over £200.

The only downside is that they are heavier.

You need to understand what part of your images that you want to improve really before making a decision.
IS is unlikely to help you at motor racing as the shutter speed needs to be above the level where IS will need to kick in.

How much money do you have to spend?

To be honest, the 55-250mm lens should get you some decent shots and personally I doubt a 70-300mm IS is going to help that much.

If I were you I would look towards the 50D and save a little more money for something like the 70-200 F4
You could pickup both of these for around £550-£600 second hand.

As Laurie says, what is your budget - both the 700D and 70-300IS are around the £350-£400, is this your maximum ? Are you wanting new or happy with 2nd hand ?

You could pick up a 40D (excellent body), 50D and probably a 60D in that price bracket. The 40D / 50D are a bigger body and a heavier camera than your 400D, so could feel better to use ? You might even be able to get a 7D (although it could be heavily used).

The 55-250IS is a great lens, especially for the cost, I've had the 70-300IS and was very happy with it, did what I wanted and I got great results with it - I only sold it to upgrade...

The 70-200F4 L is within your budget and a superb lens - it is a shorter max focal length than you currently have, but would give you excellent results and also it takes the Canon 1.4TC very well...

I suppose it depends on if you need the high FPS and do you feel the camera or the lens is restricting you...

I would also recommend a 40D. I had one of these (sold recently) and used it for motorsports. It was excellent camera with a fairly rapid fps and good quality photos.

The best thing about these is that they can be picked up very cheap now (around £160). Also, if I remember correctly, they have some light weather sealing which would be an improvement over your400d

Thanks for your replys, my budget is £400 I must admit I had not considered the 40/50/60d body, I might try to pick up a 40d and save up for the 70-300IS or even the 70-200F4 L

Well I have ordered the 55-250mm stm and have just bought a Canon 60D so I can't wait for them to arrive I post a couple of pics when all the kit gets here

Very good - enjoy your new purchases...

A mate has the 60D and loves it, does him well for the odd airshow I can get him to :)
