Does anybody have any experience of these lenses where their ranges overlap i.e. 150-300?

I am visiting Skomer next month and want to get some shots of puffins in flight and on land. From my previous experience, the birds come very close so on land a long lens is not required but in flight it is. I probably could use the Sigma for everything but would the Canon be a better option? I will be using a 7Dii.

I have the 70-300mm L and the Sigma 150-600mm sport on a MKI 7D. Given the choice I would use the Canon lens every time if you don't need the extra length. I would imagine it's a lot easier to use, it's sharper, focuses faster and it's lighter.

Lat time I went to Skomer I took a 1D4 (1.3 crop sensor), a 70-200 F2.8 L IS and a 300 F4 L IS.

I didn't have much luck with the flying shots (they are QUICK!) but the 70-200 did the vast majority of what I wanted. I have used the Sigma and I don't think the AF would be responsive enough for what you want - though the length may be handy.

Remember, whatever you take, there is a fir climb after you get off the boat and you will have to carry everything with you - food/water/clothes etc - and you will be on your feet all day so pack light:)

Skomer is a great place to visit so, most importantly, have a good time!

P.S. If the boat doesn't sail (happens quite often) then it is not a complete washout! Take a walk around the peninsular to the west of Martin's Haven - lovely cliffs and sea views as well as Seals and lots of seabirds.

It is indeed beautiful. I had to wait 3 days for the boat to sail two years ago. I mainly used my 300L and 70-200L and got some good shots but failed with BIF, probably due to poor technique. The AF speed and weight of the Sigma is a concern, I gather the Canon is quicker.

I have the sigma 150-600 it is a fine lens for bif I tested it against a canon 100-400 mk2 which was also a fine lens. I have a 7d2 and I'm not a fan of tc's so the reach of the sigma was my reason to buy this lens. Not disappointed

Have you set the lens up via the dock with the AF speed increased? When set to speed priority the AF is much faster. Certainly, AF speed with the Sigma has never been a concern, I use it to shoot F1, BIF, fast jets without issue.

I have recently but yet to test in detail. Out of interest what setting do you mainly use for OS, normal or dynamic.

Dynamic. I have custom 1 for AF speed priority and dynamic OS and custom 2 for fine AF and dynamic OS.
