Have just bought the above lens and the cheapest branded hood I can find on Amazon is £36. That's stupid money for a piece of plastic!

Can anybody recommend a good third party alternative?

Thanks in anticipation

Guess everybody buys Canon ones then.

I bought a copy hood for my 70-300 (assume you are not talking about the 70-300L) but I cannot for the life of me remember where it came from.

Works perfectly Ok ,but I think probably lacks the matt black coating on the inside of the real hood??

Genuine hood prices are silly, I have copy hoods on all my non L lenses.

The Canons are undoubtedly expensive for what they are but, whilst you can get cheaper copies, they're often inferior, usually lacking the flocked interior.

I've bought original Canon hoods for my 50, 10-22 and 17-55 when I had it. All my other lenses came with hoods.

I went through the same thing when I bought the 70-300, had a look at a non genuine one and a genuine one and opted for the genuine one having felt the difference in quality...

Still grates a bit though, as you say it's a piece of plastic...

I bought a non Canon hood for my 70-300 USM (ET-65B) currently £9.99 from Premier Ink. Works fine for me - as you say just a bit of plastic. Here is the link:

That's not so bad.
The price for a genuine Canon lens hood for a 300/2.8 is around A$900-$1000.
Yes, seriously.
A third party knock off is a bargain at around A$400-$600.
Wish I hadn't lost mine.
