Hi all,i tried out my new lens this morning and was a little surprised by the grumbling / growling of the motor when auto focusing,it's not loud but is this normal as I wasn't expecting it to be so grumpy ,
regards john.

I think so mate, not had personal experience with that lens but with other IS lens' they have been noisy when auto focusing.
It is something you will get used to and eventually switch off to.

Is it the 'IS' version?

I think it's the IS kicking in.
Mine's pretty loud too compared to my 17-55.
You get used to it. Lovely lens.....enjoy.

As above!

You should try using the 70-300 IS, it makes very worrying sounds when the IS starts and stops, but it's completely normal and you don't even notice it after a while!

I've just recently purchased the 70-200mm f4 L IS USM also, and first impressions are very good. I also noticed the loud sound when focusing, it is the IS kicking in but definitely worth it. It is so much more difficult to get sharp images handheld with the IS switched off, and you can see a noticable difference in the viewfinder too. I think the non IS version must just be for use on tripod only.

:agree:

My 70-200 IS makes the same noise. Turn it off and the USM focusing is all but silent.

I love this lens....

Should the IS be turned off at all times when using on a tripod? and only turned on when handheld?

It can easily be used without a tripod, you just need a lot of light and a fast shutter or a very steady hand.

Yeah true....I was just thinking about when I was using it around my house indoors with poor light, the IS really made a big difference. Out and about in bright sunlight should not be a problem.

Yes, it doesn't work properly when it's on a tripod. It makes it worse.

AFAIK, the 70-200 IS has can sense the feedback loop it gets on a tripod and should be fine. However, I always turn IS off if the camera is on a tripod.
