Hello all,

Quick question (apologies if its daft)...are there different tripod rings for a 70-200 f4 and a 70-200 2.8?

Thanks
Graeme

quick thank you ;)

And the f/2.8 lenses come supplied with a tripod collar, but it's an extra cost (v high) accessory on the f/4 lenses.

I got a cheapy copy off Amazon but the tripod thread looked very fragile so I had to drill it out and put a bolt through.

The F4 is quite a bit lighter than the 2.8 though, so collar not always needed I suspect, never had a prob without on mine anyway. :)

I was thinking about a third-party one myself, to give the lens/body combo better balance on the 'pod. Dunno if I want to start drilling holes in things though!

Is it sturdy though?

The problem I had with my £15 jobbie was that the tripod thread is tapped straight into the alloy, whereas the genuine Canon ones have a threaded steel bush inserted.

I'm sure it's fine in practice but I wasn't happy with the thought of it taking the weight when turned for vertical shooting. Easy enough to drill through and bolt the tripod quick-release plate directly to it.
