Looking forward to tomorrow as my new lens should be here, well its a mint used version..... I swapped it with another member on here and im so excited to getting my hands on it, is their anyone who has experience of this lens to give me a few pointers, also has anyone got any shots from this lens they would like to share with me to see how good it is, ive read alot of good reviews on this lens..........

I don't think i've ever heard anything bad about this lens. For it's price it must be one of the best lenses from any maker.

The only bad thing about it is that it will make you want the big brother f/2.8 Is.

That is the best I got with mine

I desperately need to get back to portraiture, my lens is effectively collecting dust on the shelf.

I'm currently debating which 70-200 L I should invest in, I've read a lot of people get the 70-200 F4 and end up upgrading to the 70-200 F2.8 IS when funds allow. I'm wondering whether to jump straight to it or get the F4 that is a third of the price!

I think the newer IS model is supposed to be sharper but it's quite simply a fantastic lens. Great colours, really sharp, quick to focus and light, you'll love it, congrats :)

Purely my opinion but, for what it's worth, the F2.8IS is over rated. The F4 is better, but obviously doesn't have F2.8

I was at a tech conference recently and the official photographer told me the same thing. e regretted selling his f4 IS and buying the 2.8 IS instead. Interesting view point. I hired a 2.8 IS recently for another conference and I have to say it made me cry... cry that I can't afford such a sexy piece of kit. Might try the 4 IS instead next time to make a comparison.

thank god I'm not the lone voice in the wilderness :p

I've got both IS versions and they're pretty much inseparable...normal viewing at the same aperture. Squinting at 100% does give the edge to the little 'un though.
All that said, I rarely use them and certainly not at all in the last 12 months.

I agree f4 IS is a very good lens, that doesn't really have a substitute, unless subject isolation (as shown above) or extreme light gathering power are required. I'd happily use f/4 IS over 2.8 for landscape work. F4 non-IS really requires a tripod a lot of the time at 200mm, hence the need for IS and ideally 2.8. Ironically for landscape work f4 non-is needs to be stopped down to f/5.6-8 for max sharpness, and if greater DOF is required it is a mess if handheld.

Hi Andy

You'll love it, it was my first L lens and I absolutely love it, great for Motorsport for me, fantastic colours, super quick focusing and tracking and when I get it right  very sharp

Thanks for all the comments guys...........:D

Does the 1.4x converter work well with this lens and does it still keep the AF?
Also is it worth getting a collar for it and if so where can i get a decent one from, i found what looked like a good one on fleabay, asked the seller a question and they told me that it was made of plastic , i dont fancy trusting a plastic collar with me new toy :gag:

Think the 1.4 TC works okay with it and keeps the AF.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a tripod mount, lens isn't that heavy, also the genuine Canon one is very expensive and I'm not sure / not seen the aftermarket ones,

1.4x is OK if you can afford to stop down one stop. It have some sharp shots with it.

I would suggest getting tripod mount IF you are realistically going to use it on tripod.
I have fleabay one (seller ca-market), and it is METAL, very good build quality and cost peas. It makes a huge difference to the balance, without one there is too much shake even from the mirror slap.

Cheers guys.............
Ill post up some pics of lens and shots with it tomoz.........

Both taken with my 50d, with 70-200 f4 non-IS - used a monopod. It was the first time out with the lens and camera, so very pleased:D

I have the 70-200 F4 non IS and was contemplating getting the 2.8 IS. Lots of analysis, times I would use the 2.8,cost, weight & visibility when walking around.. The F4 lens is beautiful. Decided instead to get the canon 5DMkII so can shoot if necessary at a higher ISO

Ok guys, lens came this morning and wow looks great, only went out for a little while and managed to get this, remember 1st time with this lens.....

i've just swapped from a 2.8 to f/4 NON is, due to the weight of it sitting on the bone in my kneck i broke in august. no regrets, love the f/4, focus spot on quick and silent, light to hold, and f/4 isn't a problem for me doing mainly motorsport stuff, if the lights that bad i can either drop the shutter a bit further or play with flash!

Jealous! :love::love::love:
And the first pic looks promising, my first photos with a new lens are normally terrible!

I'm trying to wait it out and see if the prices of the F2.8 will drop with the release of the Mk2, but I'm not sure I have the self-restraint, I see a post exams treat coming my way

For me it used to be pre-exam stress causing the purchases . I was also waiting for a cheap f/2.8, and look I still am, except they are far less cheap now :'(

I picked one up for £350 and don't use it as much as i should, its super sharp and gives really pleasing bokeh.
