Canon 70-200mm f2.8 mk2 - lens for pros?

Camera shops are there to sell cameras, not as demo houses for camera companies so you can then go to the cheapest place online. The reason that you pay more is because they've got staff to advise you, demo models to help people making a decision etc. If everyone just goes in to try gear out & get free advice local shops aren't going to be around much longer. So when you need something in an emergency you're stuck, or if you do want to buy a new lens/body you'll have to hire it/buy it & hope it's ok without trying it.

Don't get me wrong, I have bought from Kerso before, but if I want to handle/test gear I go to my local camera shop, have a chat, test the gear and buy from there.

Why do you pay more and buy from the shop? are you saying you pay an extra couple of hundred quid just becauase you tried it in the shop? You agree kerso is cheaper and indeed you ahve bought from him.. Yet it reads to me that you would pay a lot more money just because you got to touch it first?

I so want the mkii version. Now, if I can sell my mki and find an extra £700 then I'm there. Hmm, better start saving.

Seriously though, pictures from the mkii I've seen look amazing and I've heard nothing but amazing reviews. One day i will have one.

I pay more for the added value my local camera shop provides, if I use it. The shop charges more because they've got to pay to have knowledgeable sales staff there to give out advice, if I know exactly what I want I'll look online, but if I want to use the extra services that come with buying from a local brick and mortar store I expect to pay for it and don't have a problem with that.

It is like the saying why pay for professional images when uncle bob with his new DSLR can take the same images? You probably don't need professional images from a BBQ in your garden but you might want the extra quality and peace of mind for your wedding.

I'd have to agree. I wouldn't go in and try something from a shop knowing full well that I never intended on buying it from there. Still, it's part and parcel of having a bricks and mortar shop I guess.

So lets say your in the shop..(you know about kerso you ahve used him before) you ahve had a play wiht the lens.. you ahve all the advice and now its time to buy... You can A) say you will think about it then go buy off kerso saving a couple of hundred quid maybe.. Or B) you feel sorry for jessops or whoever and pay the couple of hudred quid extra

I would go for B and save a couple of hudred quid because once bought you get no advantage from buying it out of a shop.

Certainly not Jessops, I wouldn't feel sorry for them.

It's more about the advantage of having the shop there when you come to need it in the future. If everyone just used them as demo houses there wouldn't be many shops left, other than Jessops etc.

At the end of the day though it boils down to how you feel about using a service and not paying for it.

I understand Craik and infact if i had the funds that day i would have bought it from Jacobs right then and their.

The thing is though, There is a flaw in your statement. The flaw is that if we was talking about cars instead of lenses, many and i mean many dont just test drive a car and buy it purely because of the CS which arguably the people from the car dealer offer more advice and more testing for you on the product you may buy compared to bursting a few shots on a new lens.

Like cars, how are we suppose to test the feel and performance of a product without testing it?

Dont we as consumers have the right to "shop around"? I did not go to jacobs asking them if this lens is for me, i went their purely so i can get a hands on feel of it.

i can happily get free and more or less better advice on a TOG forum then in the shops.

You guys are not getting paid to give advice, guys from jacobs and other shops are paid to sell products and some will tell you exactly what you would love to hear for them to convince you to buy it whilst in a forum thats not the case and you generally get better more realistic truthful advice in here.

TBH i would rely on the internet more for advice then asking sales people.

If Kerso has what I want when I want it, I buy it from him. No question, end of story. just saved several hundred pounds on an 85mm f1.2 buying from him.

As to the 70 - 200 mm f2.8 mkII. It is in my opinion, for what that's worth, one of the finest lenses you can buy, bar none. If you buy it and start using it you may find that you are taking photographs more often than twice a month!

I am now a proud owner of this lens :)

my first L lens. took me 3 years to get to where i am today!

Started off with the kit lens that came with my canon 400d and then a year later, bought a nifty fifty prime f1.8 lens and then last year i bought my awsome tamron 17-50mm f2.8 along with a 430ex2 and now today my first ever L lens and instead of going cheap saving cash and buying the f4, i decided to go for the full yards and get the best 70-200mm i can get!

Will give this lens a proper test this weekend but all i can say is wow the build quality is sensational.

Next up on the agenda is a new body. :)
