Hey!

As for most sports photographers, the 70-200 is a workhorse of an lens, and same with me..
In the recent weeks my trusty Canon has started to play up..

It does not lock focus, and has real problems even finding focus on subjects far away (well - talking 10-15meters here).
If I then focus on something close by, it gains/locks focus on that straight away.. but subjects further than 5-6 meters away.. it really does have issues.
Had so many out of focus images last weekend from a basketball event...

Anyone experienced similar issues?? Guess what I am 'afraid' of is that there will be a trip to the repair place in the books.

I have tried cleaning the lens and have tried it with different cameras.. producing same results.. thus thinking that it must be the lens.. rather than all my camera bodies :-)

If you are a member of cps then send it off to Elstree for a very quick turnaround and I have always found them reasonable on price too. Afraid maintenance and repairs do have to be borne equipment use.

Do the barrels feel loose? - If so you can tighten them - that has fixed this several times on my two 70-200 f28s

Yep, got Platinum CPS, but recently moved from UK to Finland (more photography work here.. so came with that here) .. and the Platinum membership doesn't mean that much here.
And I know.. unfortunately maintaining the kit does have its own costs :-)

I'll have a feel of them later today.. haven't noticed anything .. but will have a closer look tonight and see how they feel.

AF range lock? (It has to be asked!)

Your profile address said GT Malden :-)

:-) uups, you always remember to change the address with the tax people, post office, electricity, etc.. but guess changing it on TP didn't make it to my 'To Do List' during the move :-)
Might have to correct that one.. well done for noticing...

All home remedies tried... off to Canon for repairs... :-(

Call from repair center - motor was starting to go, elements were misaligned, focussing was all over the place..
Asked if I had dropped it.. (hadn’t)
Said they would have to replace the whole front end, and costs were getting to minimum £1200 on the repairs ...
And they weren’t sure even that was going to fix it.

Strange as it was serviced 6 months ago ..l and definitely hadn’t bumped/dropped it since.

It is - now it's just a case to try to prove/convince the Insurance Company of either footing the bill or replacing it...
That's never an easy task... no matter how comprehensive insurance one has....
Especially as I need to get a working 70-200 by midweek next week.. so no need to wait for a decision from them...
But... these things happen.. :-)
