I've been looking at the Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM. Would this lens be a good one to get to cover a nice range between what i've got already?

450D Body
18-55 kit lens (Will replace next)
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC

Would the 70-200 compliment these Lenses or should I be looking at a cheaper non-L with IS?

n00b alert - Any suggestions?

love mine, you would have the same set up as me if you did and at present it does what i need it to do, the set up i mean. :D

Super duper sharp and ultrasonic AF ;)

This lens is the sickness so get one

Excellent, just had a quick look through your Flickr and it seems we'd be taking the same kind of shots too (love the Kite surfing set)

I'm on the hunt as well, but used prices have soared in the last couple of weeks. It was possible to pick one up for ~£300 but it's nearer £400 now.
Although I do keep getting tempted by the Sigmat 70-200 F/2.8, which can be found S/H for around the same price as the Canon.

Decisions, decisions....

Thanks :D, definitly a lovely lens though

My wife uses this on her 10D, and loves it for its sharpness and the fact that it is a light lens to carry around.

I love my 70-200mm, I've used it for all my wildlife stuff.

:plusone: Highly reccomend this lens really sharp and fast focus a bargian for what you get

I have the sigma f/2.8 and I love it, but I do sometimes regret not having IS (still, I'd be much more out of pocket too!).

It won't get you near to many birds, but for zoo shooting or larger animals or mammals, it should be reasonably long enough.

For the money (well 6 months ago), it's a good lens and I'm sure you'll like it. It will compliment the lenses you already have, but depends what you want to shoot really.

The 70-200 is rarely off my 40D when I'm in a town - great for so many types of shots and sharp as anything! Highly recommended (by me at least :))

Superb for motor sport. :)

I've got both the f4 and the Sigma f2.8. It might seem like an extravagance but I do use them both for quite different things. Yes I could just use one lens to do everything but here's my reasoning.

The Canon f4 is an absolute cracker of a lens and much, much lighter than Canon's f2.8 IS. The extra weight of the 70-200 means I'd NEED the IS just to try to keep the thing steady. Now if you are 6'4" and of bear like proportions then the f2.8 is probably a dream to handle but I'm 5'3" and I shoot weddings so I need to be light on my feet and I also need to be able to use it for 9 hours at a stretch. That's when I use the Sigma. The f2.8 is lovely and it's a heck of a lot lighter for me to use than the Canon.

The Canon f4, I use for outdoor family stuff mainly. Being as compact as it is, it's perfect for shots of the family out and about having fun. I'll also happily use the Canon for off camera flash stuff where I'm not usually shooting below f4 anyway.
It also serves as a really good backup to the Sigma in case of a disaster at a wedding so I usually make sure it's at least handy in the car.

I could sell both and get the Canon f2.8 but having used one i think I'd regret it.
