Yes, they work well together.

Not the best lighting conditions but some images here

ooops, just noticed it's not got is, i would imagine this would make a significant difference in performance ?

Depends on how steady you are and how you are planning on using it, the non IS version of the f4 70-200L is supposed to be Canons sharpest zoom, I had one before I got the IS model which I did prefer due to the IS (although have since sold that to get a f2.8 IS which I don't like as much due to the increased size and weight).

 it's mainly for motorsport, dog racing etc so most use would be in daylight or stadium lighting, as for steadyness, i use a siggy f2.8 and a 1dmk11 at the moment and manage well enough, lots of the canons work would be tripod based i think

If it's on a tripod then you would normally turn off the IS anyway, so should not be too much of a problem for you, IQ does not drop too much with the 1.4x added and at one and two stops down it's almost indistiquishable unless you are really pixel peeping but whether you can live with a 280 f5.6 is another matter. A good 70-200L will cost you around £350-£400 and a 1.4x converter about £180, so for a few quid more you could get a S/H 100-400L which may be more suited to your photography, has the same max aperture but gives you an extra 120mm and IS.

70-200Ls hold their value really well so if you get it and don't like it I doubt you will lose very much if anything. My 70-200L f2.8 IS now costs £500 more than when I bought it
