Anyone had the same problem

canon 70-200 2.8 mkII
Bought new but No longer under warranty

at 70mm and distance it wont focus.. well it will but produces mush.. at around 100 or more at distance will focus and sharp.. at all other distances and setting will focus and producs sharp images.. just 70 and long distance come out fuzzy.. 70 and short distance OK

Not the camera.. deffo the lens :(

Going to send in next week but wondred if anyone had same problem and knows what i might expect .

I guess it has just started doing it. How far out of warranty is it. You may be able to argue that the lens wasn't of merchandisable quality as you would expect it not to fail after a short time, and get it fixed by Canon. You haven't knocked by any chance have you.?

Just checked.. didn't realise how long.. bought brand new July 2011 ..didnt realise the MKII had been out that long..£1,799 and been worth every single penny :)

nagh deffo doesnt get knocked.

Same but different.
Had the nikon version. The sides become very soft and the middle was sharp at all lenght`s. Happened during a game. I too could swear that I had not knocked it. The out come was that the barrel had been banged and the elements were misaligned. replaced barrel. Cost to repair was just under the cost to replace.

well this is bang on sharp left to right and middle.. just if i open up to 70m and anyhting in distance is mush. as in if a try to focus on somehting a long way off at 70... anyhting close or at other settings its sharp all the way accross... so maybe not same?

Sent lens to canon elstree.. arrived this mornign and I get a call with a quote of 182 quid.. I ask whats wrong wiht it and they say.. thats a set fee.. they havent started yet.. I said suppose its juts a screw needs tightening.. 182 quid they say. as it includes cleaning service and af check.... (yes the flip side is if it needs 600 quid of parts still 182)

Thing is.. I have withing last couple of weeks had both by 1dx cleaned and serviced.. my 400 lens cleaned and serviced plus fixing for less than 182 at same place..

seems a bit hit miss on prices.

That's unfortunate mate. I've never had anything go wrong with a lens. Hopefully you'll get it back as good as before. I see you said it was worth every penny so i'm assuming you're a fan. I've just posted a thread looking for recommendations for equipment for my course and was wondering would you recommend this lens as a portrait lens on a 5d mk2 or would you prefer to use a prime? I know it's a hard question to answer but if it helps my course will cover a few different types of photography including portrait, still life and sports as well as photojournalism and i was wondering if this lens would excel at these in the right hands.

well had it a long time and first problem that could have been my doing:(

I dont do portraits but would answer yes anyway.. fantastic sharp lens wide open at f2.8
