Is the Canon 70 - 200 F4L with Canon TC a good combo?

What are you shooting?

It won't be good indoors...

Well I want a len that be good all round to be honest.. Sometime I want be able to do portrait at a distance... Wildlife shots... Moon Shots.. all sorts really

Anything in reasonable light and that is stationery and it'll be fine, but as for birds in flight etc. etc. the AF may be a little too slow, even in average light..

It's nice and sharp though for bird and wildlife portraits though, with a 1.4x. If you use a 2x, you will have to manually focus, unless you have a 1 series body of course, in which case, you can only get AF on the centre AF point

Hmmm I really dont want to spend ALOT of money on this set up so what do you guys suggest? But I like somethings that is good and last me a while

Hi Rookies, here are a couple of indoor shots with quick adjustments, all with a 70-200 F4L and a 1.4TC on. Hope they are of some use in making your decision.

To get good photos you need a dedicated lens for what you want to photograph, the lens thats good for all situations (moon to macro) doesn't exist. Really you would be better advised to concentrate on particular subjects that a lens is designed for and build up your lens kit bit by bit.

As much as I would love to do that but cant afford to... So if you were in my shoes what lens would you get then?

You could always aim slightly lower than an L series lens pick something up much cheaper leaving you money to invest in other kit. Personally I'd recomend you have a look on the bay for an old 70-210 canon either the f4 or the f3.5-4.5 both of which offer excellent performance for less than £100 leaving you plenty of cash to put towards a longer telephoto possibly a prime for birding.

What lenses have you got now? Also what body?

I find 70 - 200 a very useful range for sports and portraits, but I think it will be a bit too short for wildlife especially birds, probably too short for moon shots. (I am talking without TC here).

I've gone for a 70 - 200 but in doing so I know that I'm restricting myself at the long end (as need to sell my 75 - 300), I've made the decision that if I'm going anywhere were I need the longer reach I'm going to hire a lens/TC and get a feel for how the various options will work with my kit and then maybe make a decision. However I can't really see that many situations where I'll want a longer lens, or if I do find lots of situations I'll just have to cram them all into the weeks hire

I have the following

Canon 40D
17 - 40 L
50mm Prime
105 Sigma Macro

So as you can see I not got a long lens... I too agree that the 70 - 200 would do most things i want and a TC is only £100 odd if needed to get one at a later date making it up to 400mm which is good ain it?

If you get the 2x TC on the 70 - 200 f4 the viewfinder will be very dark, you will also have to manual focus. To see what I mean set one of your lenses to f8 and press the DOF preview button.

With the 50mm and the 105 Macro you will be pretty much sorted for portraits. For wildlife etc you'd really want something longer than 200mm though, it's a tricky one...

I have found that my Sigma 105mm not as good as I wish for portrait but it FAB at Macro...

Hmmm so maybe either a sigma 100 - 300 or a canon 100 - 400 but cant seem to like the push and pull.. I dont really want a prime Long lens as like to have flexibility just incase
