I am interested in your opinions whether the optical quality would be better in the canon or the sigma as you can pick them both up for around the same price at the moment, obviously the sigma is newer so should be more advanced and more precise but I cannot decide which lens would be better in terms of optical quality. Any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :) xxx
 
Canons 70-200 2.8 IS in my opinion.
The L Range is Pro Weather Sealed.

Canon will last years and has a better residual value.

I would go with the Canon any day of the week. I use the 70-200mm f2.8 IS L on 5DmkII bodies and also 7D and it does a brilliant job across the range wide open and that's what I need. The Sigma doesn't get quite as good reviews and I've experienced first hand the quality control issues with Sigma.
 
Love my Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS. I've not used the canon but the IQ of the sigma is fantastic. I would have loved to have the big off white lens on the front of my 7D but when I bought mine I couldn't justify the extra cost. Has the Canon come down that much?

The only bit that feels slightly cheap is the lens hood, the rest is superbly built. In use the only thing I've noticed is that the OS "jumps" across the frame as you pan whereas canon IS lens' I have used are much smoother. However it does have a two setting OS for panning which also works brilliantly.

We are talking about the 70-200 2.8L which is Weather sealed. Who mentioned 100-400mm???

The L Range are pretty much all Weather-sealed.

We are discussing the 70-200 2.8 Is the L Range of the 70-200 is Weather-Sealed.

You came on posting about 100-400 not being weather sealed.

I bet you analysed this thread googled it just to find a argument. Is life really that boring??

sorry mate but i think your being a wee bit pathetic and rude here, i have alot of friends that use canon and if i remeber the manual that comes with the 70-200mm is abit dicky on the subject and as i said not all l lenses are sealed.
as for arguments matt, your the only one trying mate, and my life boring not a chance, im off out with my wife and 4 young girls to ride there new bikes and skateboards, so look in the mirror and grow up mate(not everyone on heres looking to start arguments)i was just pointing out a fact, and maybe a newbe could comeon a read your comment and read it as all lenses, my post was not aimed as an attack on you,
and also it does not matter if your lens is weathersealed if the bodys not does it.

Guys guys chill out, some L's are and some arnt, my canon 24-70 L is weather sealed and my 70-200 2.8 IS and my 17-40L are weather sealed, but when i had my 100-400 L and 300mm f4 L IS prime these where not weather sealed. I dont understands why they dont weather seal all the L's but its just one of those things i suppose.

Well thanks guys I have decided to go with the canon, because I have heard the sigma isn't sharp wide open, and that the sigma has OS problems, and yes the canon can be picked up for around £950 which is pretty much the price of the sigma

Good choice, my canon 2.8 IS is awesome, the speed at which it focusses is just amazing and its razor sharp, even at 2.8
