Canon 6d - WIFI and Windows XP - on adhoc

There are instructions for this, but I'll be damned if they work. I've tried the instructions, my own methods (as Im pretty confident with WIFI networks) and even though there are instructions from Canon to say this will work, I'm just drawing a blank.

I dont want to be using a USB cable and I dont want to use a smart phone as it defeats the object. The only other way (I havent tried this yet) but I think it would work, would be to connect through the router with and have the 6d connected to the router and my laptop connected to the router and get it working that way - though I would honestly prefer a straight set up from laptop through to 6d i.e. I cant take a router into a field, but I can power a laptop off its own batteries and the camera off its own battery.

I have been able to successfully connect Win XP to the camera through the WIFI - BUT, EOS Utility is refusing to do anything with it.

Any hacks/fixes or tips that might get me going? Thanks in advance !

If it helps, I have AVG Free running on there, in case that is doing something. I'll be spending some time this evening (probably hours) seeing if its blocking anything, cheers1

Have made it work OK via a Mac, but that probably doesn't help if you are on XP
 
If I get chance today will see if I can get my 6D connected to my laptop. It's running windows 7 but should be able to confirm set up for you.
Only really tried it with my phone
 
Struggling to get mine done without going through the router! Its asking for Encryption key but dont know what it is :banghead:
 
Unfortunately I've just upgraded to Yosemite and the Canon software isn't supported under this OS. :( But then they've only had 4 months to work on it:rage:. So I can't go through a set up for you. I just found that AdHoc was the worse option. Using a router was so much better.

Now if you look within the Canon Utilities folder there is a piece of software called connection assistant. This should launch automatically, and on the Mac appears on the top option bar. You use this to connect to the camera. Try launching this manually and see if it helps. Takes a short while to find the camera. Once selected you should be able to us DPP. I suspect it's the connection between camera and computer that's the problem. However if you initially struggled like me you may have all sorts of weird selections within the camera software. Try deleting any set ups you've saved. Disable wifi and start again via your own hub. Get that working and then try the AdHoc option. I have noticed it does take the system a few minutes to sort itself out. I think the software needs some work on Canon's part to make it a bit more user friendly. Probably the guy who wrote it understands it but the manual isn't that precise or particularly easy to follow I thought

Might be the password to log onto your router

I want to <not> use the router, and adhoc straight from the laptop to the camera, it can be done but looks like its a lot of faffing. If I get it working, will post up a solution. So far, google is turning up blank on a working solution.

From what I am reading, the 6d itself will be the sender so it might be a case of laptop connecting to the 6d rather than the other way around. Will have a go and see what I can do. PITA thats for sure.
 
I managed to get my laptop to pic the 6d up when I was disconnected from wifi but it was asking for encryption code which I couldn't find or guess.
 
6D + W7 + adhoc directly to the 6D works for me without issue, just tried it for the first time as i usually use a USB to tether or Wifi via a tablet and phone.
 
It does work fine if you have a router and it's your own network but take away the router and it complains.

It's all ok now anyway, I have all spare router from my teletext days and have a used that so all fine and dandy. Just another power socket in use :S at least I got wifi on there now handy for some upcoming Christmas grotto work :)
 
Mine worked direct, no router. Might seem obvious but double check FW is switched off on the laptop if it has one.

I dont think it has - what FW ? (its an old lappy, acer aspire, about 5 years old if not a bit older) and I've only got Win XP on there, so it might be the OS thats causing the issue.

I'd buy a copy of Win7 but at £80 for the home edition, I just as well get a new laptop as this one might go bang at any point. I'll see if I can get it to pay for itself/get more event work before parting with the money - I really want to get an F1.4 lens and for the convenience of wifi with no router, I'll stick with the router option just cash flow is better
 
Sorry, FW means firewall. Also make sure you're running the latest** EOS utility (dated 30th Oct) as well:

Latest XP version, a few months (11th July) behind the W7 version:

Altho W7 and XP are very different the principle of connection is the same between them in terms of connecting to the camera. I'll do a step by step tonight if you want?

Just managed to do this via using my iPhone as a hotspot and connect my laptop to the phone and the 6d to the phone via the Laptop EOS utility option on the 6D
