Hi

Hoping for any advice from anyone who may of had similar problems or just general advice on how to proceed.

Owned my Canon 6D from new about 8 or 9 years old. Love the camera even after all those years.

I was out earlier today, took a few photos and went to review them, the play button would not display the images I had taken.

The rear LCD displays as normal but :

1 The Q button don't work.

2 The playback don't work.

Top Lcd shows settings display as normal.

1 The only button that works on the top plate next to the LCD is the light which illuminates the display.

Back button focus works and shutter works.

I have no idea if an image is captured as the camera won't allow playback.

Waiting on Daughter to come home so I can try the SD card in her laptop.

Menu Button won't work.

Info button won't work.

I can change Shutter speed and Aperture via the control wheels whilst ISO is stuck where I left it at 500

Connected camera to PC as I normally would but the PC does not see the camera.

Just before Christmas the 24/105L lens that came with the camera developed a fault and after quite some time with a repairer (Frustrating) here in Manchester it ended with the lens not being economical to repair.

So I purchased a second hand one which in all fairness looks like it's hardly been used.

This is a dilemma now, as in my mind I am sort of thinking two faults right close together, after all those years must mean it's reached the end of it's life span. It pains me to say that. It sounds weird too but I really do seem to love this thing.

I was hoping for some guidance as to whether I am missing something obvious that might be at fault ?

Failing that what would be peoples thoughts be on my next move.

I live pretty close to WEX so could pop down to see there repair arm but in reality any repair is most likely (if possible) to be expensive compared to the cameras worth.

If this is not an option I could buy another 6d as they come on here pretty often in fact there's one on now but I guess most folk would say you got to move with the times and upgrade to a new model.

Would be very grateful for any help with this.

Thanks
Gaz

Doesn’t sound good. I had a 70D that started playing up and took it to canon. The repair would have been a main board replacement or some such and not economical to repair. I’d get it checked out and be prepared to get a replacement. Try the R6 ? Canon have a loan scheme to try before you buy.

If the camera is faulty it'll still probably be worth getting an estimate.

I had a camera repaired recently that I'd thought would be beyond economic repair but it wasn't.

Good luck with it.

You’ve not set ‘lock’by accident?

Would a firmware update/reinstall help?
May be remove the battery for a while, not sure if it'll help but some tech 'responds' to power off after issues

Thanks Tim. My gut is telling me to buy new but i'd hate to do so if it was something that could be easily sorted. With having the camera for so long you can see I don't like to change my camera unless it's broken.
I'll look into the Canon try out. I think it would be a wise move as I wouldn't want to change brand so Iogic says the R6 or R5 would be the next model of choice.

Thanks Alan it's worth thinking about. It was just such a faff with the 24/105L as my gut at the time was to just buy a replacement.

Hi Gary

I have checked that and it's off.

Thanks.

Hi Gav.

I tried power off and on. Battery out. Changed SD card in and out.

It's all worth a try.

I just ordered the hire for the Easter weekend. Thanks for that tip.

I'll pop the 6d down to Wex tomorrow too.

That's an odd fault you have. I didn't get that with my old 6D, but did have one button that stopped working.
Has it been exposed to moisture at all? They aren't as well weather sealed as the 5D series.

Just FYI, WEX do offer repairs but they have to send them to their central workshop to do it.
I had the rear screen glass (not the LCD) replaced by them and it was about £90. So going by that, if you need a logic board or buttons replaced, you going to be looking at £150+ if not closer to £300, but which point you at the same price as another s/h 6D.

I enjoyed my 6D, but the R6 is going to be a giant leap up. I upgraded my 6D to the RP, which is basically a mirrorless 6D2 and can be had for £800ish.

Hi there thanks for taking the time to pass on your experiences.
I spoke to someone at Hlehmann of Stoke-on-trent. They seemed very well informed and confirmed my thoughts that due to age/cost and possible lack of parts my money word be better going towards a new model.
Luckily I can afford to get a new model I just don't like changing my gear unless it's broke.
I'm looking forwards to trying the R6.

I take it you like your RP ?

Sorry to hear that Gaz, Good luck with the new gear(y)

Yer it's sad to see it go. I've had to shove it into a cupboard as every now and then I switch it on, in the hope it will spring back to life.
Thanks for your kind words.

It's a shame when you're forced to replace something, particularly if you weren't planning to.
Yes the RP is an improvement over the 6D, the AF system is much better and the advantages of mirrorless like being able to see your exposure in the view finder and brilliant. Plus I like a fully articulated screen which the 6D didn't have.
Plus the RP is much lighter and even with the RF24-105L it's still lighter than the 6D and EF 24-105L.

The R6 will be a great improvement over the 6D. The only slight downside is it's still only 20mp, but it's a much newer sensor so the image quality should be better. The R6 does have many other features that are better, like IBIS and higher frame rates (neither of which interest me though).

Enjoy the weekend with the R6.

it's still only 20mp,
Yes off what you read that seems to be the only downside.
That said I have always been pleased with the pixel count on the 6d so I guess I'll just have to see what the camera feels like.
If I'm honest the exciting part of the new models is the focusing. I seem to enjoy taking dog portraits and although the single centre focus point as served me well on the 6d I'm hoping to be amazed by the new technology.
