Hi,

I do photography and video making, and looking for a good camera that's okay in photogrpahy, but can do good video making as well..
I've been told canon 650d or 600d are the good options for what I'm looking for.
However, I'm confused in both, as both look about the same, but canon 600d is a bit cheaper.

Can anyone suggests which one is good for me outta two or suggest any better also, open to suggestions.
Budget is £300-400.. Cheaper solution the better.

I currently have Nikon d3100 dSLR, its really good for photography considering the price, but video quality really sucks in medium-low light.

I'd appreciate your kind help,
Regards

600D is has Digic4 processor and 3.7fps frame rate (for stills), 650D is Digic5 and 5.0fps, otherwise they're very similar, perhaps Digic5 has cleaner encoded video, I'm not sure, you'd have to look into it, but I'd be surprised if there's much difference.

Worth considering EOS-M, as this is essentially a 650D sensor and Digic5 in a tiny body, good option for video and about £200 with the kit lens, it's cheap as it flopped at launch (it had poor Autofocus performance, which is still not great but now much improved with a firmware patch!) You won't be able to tell the video output apart from a 650D vs the EOS-M, and leaves you with more money for accessories, grips, mic etc, oh and some spare batteries too, they're tiny so get a couple!

Thanks, that's some great help! Really appreciate that..

I'll consider EOS-M, so basically it'll give better quality than d3100 and same as 650d, right?

Also, If i buy new one, will it have upgraded firmware or I'll have to do it myself. Any link on how to upgrade would be much appreciated.

Really appreciate your kind help,
Regards

Edit:
Is photo quality better than D3100 as well?
Will i be able to attach the external microphone to it? Since i cant attach it to my current d3100.

I've got no idea on Nikon stuff so I can't offer any info or comparison there, sorry! EOS-M video output would be the same as 650D basically, I think new ones ship with the new firmware installed, mine did (v2.0.2) but the file is on Canon's site if you did manage to find one with old firmware.

Be aware that the AF still is not brilliant, it works well enough but I tend to use mine manual focus for video so it's not a problem for me. External mic is fine, has a standard 3.5mm input - looks kind of funny with a big shotgun mic stuck to the top of it :D There's loads of blogs/videos out there about the EOS-M, I read/watched a bit before I got mine and have been pleasantly surprised so far.

At that kind of money you could look at Panasonic Lumix GH2 (old stock or second-hand), they're supposedly great for video/stills, but I'm not so familiar with them - pretty sure they shoot 1080p and have loads of features, although latest model is GH4 so they're a few years old now. They're small, but more traditional DSLR shape at least, which you might prefer.

The 650D has slightly better specs than the 600D and a touchscreen, for me if you can pick up a cheap 600D I'd go for that. Curry's were clearing them out for £178 last month, if I'd known at the time I would have bought another one.

Damn! That's sick! That was some deal.. OMG! cant believe we missed that.!

Some really great info guys! Cant thank enough!

However, EOS-M is a compact system camera, I don't I would go with it as I fancy the term 'dSLR', lol.. However, I think canon 650d since the price is not much higher than 600d, its nearly the same..

Sometimes, I just think to buy an iPhone6 for video purposes and keep d3100 for photography, lol, but that's me crazy thoughts.. but does it sound any good to you or illogical?

However, I'm considering Panasonic Lumix GH2, looks good.. I'm comparing it with Canon and lets see how it goes. I'll keep you update.. I'm not rushing it at the moment because my d3100 works absolutely fine for photography, but when it comes to video I get devastated and have no other option to buy any other. Lets see, I'm looking for some good offers or may be I'll get some good deal on Christmas.

Can't thank enough for such kind replies... You are pure genius!
