I have sold my Canon 450d recently as I am looking to upgrade,I have pretty much made my mind up on the 60d,but wanted to check there is nothing I am missing by not going for the 7d.

I like the idea of the 60d being smaller and lightweight, and from what I gather they both use the same processor so no difference there.
The added burst speed of the 7d doesn't appeal to me as I never used burst mode on my 450d and the same goes for the superior autofocus as I tend to only use single point autofocus.( would there be much difference between the 60/7d using single point autofocus on wide aperture lenses?)

So besides the above points any advantages of the 7d? Don't want to spend all my money on a 60d only to find I should have saved up a bit longer!

Thanks

FWIW, I looked at those 2 camera's and in the end went for the 7D because it had a metal body.

If you don't use the focusing system of the 7D, you don't mind a plastic body and aren't interested in microadjust - it's a no-brainer. 60D all the way...

I've just got my first camera with an articulated screen and I'm finding it be be very interesting... and I'm pretty sure that if / when my 20D dies :'( it's replacement will have one too.

Thanks for the replies.
For me the metal body is a drawback if that makes sense,I don't put my camera through a rough and tuff time and it's always carried in my crumpler bag,and having taken my camera around Asia last year in 35 degree plus heat I have now come to realise that the lighter the better is the way forward!!

I went through this and got the 7D. I shoot a lot of sports though so the 7fps helps a lot. Also the build on the 7D is second to none, i was blowen away with it after using a 450D. Felt like i could roll it down a mountain n it would be fine.

Also wont the 7D has better ISO performance as well..?

Mmm iso performance is an interesting one, haven't seen anything on this, will do some googling!!

The 7d has twin processors compared to 1 on the 60d.

Andy
Which are used to increase frame rate. If you don't want 7fps, it is a non-issue.

Not surprisingly either ;) 60D and 7D have the same processor and same sensor, so ISO performance will be the same...

Ok looks like I'm sticking with the 60d then!

Looks like a great camera, just didn't want to spend all that money and then start kicking myself a couple months down the road that I should have got the 7d,I loved my 450d,but having a Sony camcorder sat there I thought I would sell both and combine them into 1 (60d) and get an upgrade on the camera side of things along the way!!

How's the video on the 60d,is it comparable to a current HD camcorder?

Thats what i done, sold my 450D and video camera for a 7D. Picked it up second hand though from here.

I think either way you will be happy. But remember with the 7D you wil have to also buy CF cards that can cost a bit if your after large storage. That got me, bought my 7D n spend another £100 on cards. I believe the 60D is SD so can use the ones from you 450D.

Ohh also the video on 7D, 60D, 5Dii, 550D are great, they are the same quality. All is manual focus incase you didn't no.

What's it like using manual focus? only ever used the auto mode on my camcorder.
Also how does the sound quality compare? My camcorder had Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound recording and looking at the specs the 60d only has mono!

I'm going through a similar situation at the moment, a 60D is with reach but a 7D will require me to wait a while, I’m also upgrading from a 450D and have a good set of glass.

Here are some of my thoughts on the matter.

• Both have a wireless flash controller (good for my 430 EX II)
• Both are very similar in size.
• Working in engineering we use all sorts of materials and I have no issue with a body being non magnesium alloy.
• Both are the same MP
• Both are the same ISO
• The 60D uses memory cards that I already have.
• The 7D has better focussing, I don’t shoot sport but this may increase my keeper rate.

I never shoot video and have pretty much never shot with in burst.

I’m still stuck on what to do, like any bloke I love gadgets and shiny new toys.

Except to any 1 series ever made...

How's the focussing in low light...

That's one thing I'm very interested in...

Every now and then I do nightclub pics and having a camera not being able to focus would be a pita.

If you're undecided, go to a decent camera shop and play with both. The last thing you want to do is buy one, and then in a few weeks time wish you'd got the other. Personally I like shooting wildlife which is why I went with the 7D, but my old Olympus bridge camera has a multi position screen and it's useful at times. I couldn't be without the focus system on the 7D now though.

The 7D is more weatherproof than the 60D, and in all honesty, it can't be that much heavier. Not sure about the 60D, but the 7D batteries are very expensive, they're the same as the ones from a 5D2.

They will come with one battery and charger, oh and a neckstrap!

Well the decision has been made and iv just picked up a new 60d!!

Just a quick note to potential customers, all the camera shops I went into all said they were struggling on stock, once this batch goes they don't know what the supply will be like, the problems in Japan are starting to filter down and Canon are struggling to get their cameras out,how true this is I don't know, but sounds feasible.

Plumped for the 60d in the end as the main advantage of the 7d seems to be it's extra speed in burst, and it's superior focus tracking, but for someone who rarely shoots moving subjects there was no need for the extra cost.

Another thing that always comes up when looking at the differences between the 60/7d is the magnesium alloy chassis, but I really can't see the need. I had a 450d which was plastic, but I never bumped it and looked after it well and it was still in great condition. Maybe if I was a professional photographer using my camera everyday then it may have it's advantages, but that's all that seems to come up is how the 7d has a metal chassis as if it's the be all and end all of a camera!!!

I think you've made the right choice.

Now go and spend the difference on lenses :D

I personally prefer having a lighter camera- I have the 60D. There are moments where I look at my father's 50D and think that it feels really solid, but if I had to carry it around with a long lens then I would probably die!

People who don't feel the need for an articulating screen haven't tried one.....! I think its amazing- no more sore necks and dirty knees!

Batteries are the same LP-E6 type... they don't have to be expensive, I bought 2 non-oem batteries from Amazon which are decoded, along with a Meike grip for something like £35. They work just as well as the Canon I reckon.

Just adding to this thread - I'm also using the non-OEM "decoded" batteries and haven't had any problems with them.

I've used eBay for batteries in the past but despite being a little cheaper, you have to be careful which seller you choose.

I purchased mine from 7dayshop.com: http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_3&products_id=109461

With regards to the 60D/7D question - I went for the 7D in the end as I didn't like the idea of the flappy-screen and I'd already got considerable investment in CF cards (coming from a 40D). The 60D's body felt too small in my hands compared to the 40D and once you get a big lens on it, I found the feel of the 60D's body to be less comfortable.

At the time I bought mine, I don't think I knew the 60D had the built in speedlite transmitter, or I may have been less convinced to go for the 7D I must admit :)

(Absolutely love the 7D though, 0 regrets in purchasing it!)

It would be great to get some feedback after you have played with it for a while.

Will defiantly do, only charged the battery so far, been busy working! Have a day off tomorrow so will have a good play around and will post my opinions over the next week or so. Will only be able to compare it to my old 450d,but for a lot if people I guess it maybe useful as this is probably a common upgrade root.

It's interesting, the number of people who have upgraded from the 450d to a 7d. I am also one of those. In my case I have dipped my toe in the water and confirmed to myself that I do enjoy photography so I decided it was a good time to get some good kit that will last a long time.
I chose the 7d over the 60d for some of the reasons already mentioned, but I also like the 100% viewfinder of the 7d.
I have been very naughty over the past few weeks. I bought a 70-200 f2.8 IS two weeks ago and today I got the 7d and a 17-40 f4.
I'll have a play over the next few weeks and update.

Where did u get the 7d from
Can't find one anywhere

Well I am a 7D owner and love it to bits. I take it with me every time I go away. And some times with cabin luggage it can and has had knocks. And marks at all on the body. If had a 60d ( I use to have a 400d ) the body would have been marked. So for me I needed a robust sale.
The 60d is a great sale and you will enjoy it. As for video mode, there is lots to talk about, so go to you tube and do some research

I was extremely lucky. I walked into SRS Microsystems in Watford and they had one on reserve for someone who was supposed to collect it two weeks ago and didn't. It was the only one they had though.

It is difficult to find, all of the online retailers I looked at show "Out of Stock"

Very lucky indeed :)

Ok bad news!!!
After trying out the camera for the first time earlier I found out it seems to be broke, put the newly charged battery in and switched on.... Nothing, completely dead. So will be heading straight back to the camera shop first thing Monday!

Never mind looking at the 7d maybe dare I say I should have looked at a nikon!!!

Didn't realise the camera shop was open today, but found out it was, popped the camera back in a got a new one no problems at all.

Apparently my one is the second one they have had back from the current batch with the same problem so maybe worth people making sure they check the camera is all working before they leave the shop if anyone is thinking about buying 1.

Yes it was an upgrade for me from my 450d,I also had a Sony hd camcorder so by selling both those I didn't have to put much money towards the new 60d and I had a camera that could do the job of 2 pieces of kit and had a nice upgrade in spec as well.

Why did I go with the 60d? Well firstly it is a reasonable amount less than the 7d price wise, but for me the extra features on the 7d were all geared to action photography and I don't do any action photography.

With the 7d you get a higher burst rate and more focus points which makes it better for focus tracking, but I never use either.

Another big thing for me was size and weight, the 60d is smaller and lighter, maybe not by much, but it all adds up at the end of a long day carrying your camera around.

Bottom line is both cameras share the same sensor and metering system so picture quality wise they are about the same, there are other small differences, but for me it all added up to a 60d,but for others I can easily see why they went for the 7d.

Will post in the next week or so on what I actually think of the 60d once I have had a proper go with it!
