Hi guys.

Just got my new 60D and have a basic problem.

When I turn the camera on, the LCD screen is black and doesn't show what you are looking at. if I press the button to take a pictute 'blind' the the flash pops up and a photo is taken because then I can see the photo on playback

Can you help as we have looked in the manual but nothing ssems to make sense.

Cheers

You're in green rectangle mode (full auto) if the flash pops up. The camera thinks it needs to flash to get a picture.

No picture on the LCD screen. When? It's not like a point and shoot you know...

Thanks for the reply Andy I have just reworded the question. The LCD shows no image in the green rectangle mode nor any other I can see at the moment.

When are you expecting to see the photo? After you have taken the photo or before like on a point and shoot?

Awww thanks Pooley, that was my mistake, serves me right from jumping from a point and shoot to the D60, now all I have to do is find the setting which sharpens up the image in the LCD screen, I can see its gonna take a while to get to grips with this!!!

Thanks again for replying, I wasn't in Live View (see the other reply) therefore the LCD was blank, I have altered the setting and now have a picture in the screen ~ however a bit 'fuzzy' but that is probably another setting to explore!

If any of you fancy free accommodation in Spain for a while teaching be how to use this bu**er please feel free to volunteer!!!

DSLRs are meant to be used by looking through the viewfinder. The focus system is a lot quicker that way.

Focusing in live view isn't automatic - plus it will run down the batteries quite quickly.

If you haven't already found it, the live view button is to the top right of the screen (also the record button for filming btw, not the button for taking photos). Live view is very slow to focus and abit of a hassle, i always use the view finder instead, much easier & quickier. However, live view is very useful for tri-pod use, setting up the right angle, and the flip out screen really comes into its own when shooting up high or down low...

Anything else let me know & i'll try to help. Had mine a few months and still dont know it all.

If you're struggling to get the image sharp you need to half press the shutter. Like the above post you ideally want to be looking through the viewfinder as opposed to using the LCD screen in normal use.
My best advice is to set the lens to 'af' put the camera on 'p' mode then take a few shots using the viewfinder. Once you're used to that you can advance to the semi automatic modes live 'av' or 'tv'. It's not actually that difficult once you get going, you should be up and running before Xmas day!

Just tried 'af' and mode P and the pictures are great but does the info on the screen stay there.

Cheers Paul

Press the info button to scroll through what's available on the LCD screen, including an electronic spirit level. More info is available if your in a proper mode and not one of those pictogram thingy's :)

You didn't say what year.. :D

Morning Guys..
Took the camera out again this morning and tried to use Auto Focus but that dont work.
It wont take a picture and the flash pops up.
Turned the dial to P and it works..
So why no Auto Focus..

You are going to need to provide more information than you are currently giving I'm afraid.

What were you shooting a picture of? Indoors or outdoors? What modes did you try? What settings (aperture, shutter speed etc.)? Are you using the viewfinder or liveview? Is the switch set to AF mode on the lens?

Can I just advise the Op that he really needs to read the manual thoroughly.
It seems to me that he is not familiarised with DSLR and even for the ones who are into it buying a new camera requires to read the basic controls from the manual, let alone someone without any skills and stepping into DSLR.
Please do not take any offence on what I am saying but it will save you a lot of hair pulling if you sit down with a huge cup of tea and spend a good few hours going through the manual and trying it, go through chapter by chapter and get familiarised. I bet you are going to encounter loads of strange terms so get ready to google them and read what it means.

The way you are carrying with questions you are bound to hit the wall, sorry to be so blunt but I am just trying to help.

I 100% agree with you however I have found that the mediators, one at least have a less than tolerent attitude to this form of advice. What is wrong with telling someone to look at the instructions, or look on google if they want to find something. One thread asked "where can I buy this head", er.. google.

I personally, and this may be just me, would not approach a forum unless I had read the instructions or tried to sort it out myself and "learn in the process.

People ask "what is this for" or "where can I buy", when a simple glance at the instructions or a google will supply the answer. I am very happy to help and always will be but as a manager once said to me, "why don't you look up the telephone number of X, instead of asking me, dont you have a phone book"

Again I mirror what has been said, this is NOT meant as a rude answer in any way, and in fact I can not remember the last time I read an instruction book, I just enjoy the getting it, playing with it and learning.

I think we have to look at this particular episode (thread) in a slightly different view, at least this is how I think. Yes its common for people to ask sometimes simple question like what is this for or what does that do etc when a simple google or reading the instruction manual would provide with the answer. Most times they just require a simple pointer and the person goes ahead and understands it. But when the reply required is a detailed one or as it happens in this particular case the person asking clearly has no clue at all about the most basic controls and principles of DSLR then a few irated comments or some with lack of patience are bound to crop up, although on this thread I must admit that members trying to help out are really bending themselves backwards and giving the OP advice.

True.

When I first joined I used to think have you bothered to look for yourself", or "if you want to know where to buy a tripod why ask here, check jessops!".

Then I started thinking, well perhaps some have not "grown up" with cameras, from film to the first DSLRS like me so give a little.

I have learnt now it's best to not reply than say "have you looked here or there" so now I tend to not respond to such threads.

NO insult intended Gerrard.

BY THE WAY, HELLO, I have a 60D, PM me and I will give you my number so you can call me.

Thanks Jeremy.. no offence taken and I might take you up on the offer of a PM..

Thanks all for your comments and I appreciate what you are saying, I belong to several bike forums and have been a dispatch rider for more years than a lot of people have been alive and it used to nark me when I saw what I thought were simple, stupid questions on the forums, but now I have just started on photography I wish I had been a little more tolerent of peoples problems.
With the camera there is a quick start manual with a 1 to 10 on how to get started with the camera which I have followed to the letter then I find out I still cant take a photo because you have to set the time and date and format the card, unfortunately Canon have decided to omit this info, this might go without saying to some but I was completely baffled when I did what it said and couldn't get a photo.
I have skimmed through the manual in it's entirity and I am now wading my way through it and trying to pick relavent information whilst I have the camera in my hand, but for the rank amateur the explanations conatined in it certainly leave a lot to be desired. ie If I put the dial to landscape do you have to change any other settings or not? The instructions for changing the settings is on a totally different page so I assume not, however I have found that making assumptions is not always a clever thing to do!!
The other problem I have is that I live in quite a remote part of Spain and unlike the UK there are no camera clubs or people around me to help so I am having to rely on you guys.
I'm sorry if my questions seem inane but I am genuinely here asking for help and if I can't get the help from the manual I have to ask.
I have not been brought up with cameras and this is the first 'serious' camera I have ever handled, I bought it cos it will grow with me and as soon as I learn the basics I am sure I will be up and running, I think apart from using my wife's point and shoot the last camera I had was a box brownie!!!
Just ignore me if the questions seem too stupid to answer, someone else will take pity I'm sure !!! LOL !!

Paul.
