Hi all

Looking for a new camera which can gives reasonable results at high ISO. Is there much difference between the 60d and 70d regarding performance in low light?

I am not interested in the video abilities of the cameras, just taking stills of ballroom dancers.

Thanks

in two simple words, pretty much sweet nothing.

From what I have seen on still images the two are pretty much identical performers especially in raw shooting.

Yes the 70 goes upto 25000 or whatever but lets be honest, who cares what the number is if its no good past 12400.

Save yourself some cash for a lens and get the 60D definate.

Suppose they have to be better than my 20D  definately time for a new shiny camera!

Cant afford a canon 70-200 2.8, any other suggestions for a lens? I already have a canon EF 70-300 f/4.0-5.6 IS USM

For indoor photography you will ideally need an f2.8 lens, regardless of the camera you're using. That said most newer cameras will give acceptable results at 6400 or even higher with some pp. I can get acceptable results of badly floodlit sports at iso 10000 or 12800 on my 70D and I expect the 60D to be similar. If you want even less noise then perhaps consider a 5D.

What lens are you using at present and what iso can you get at best for the shutter speed you need?
Are you able to fill the frame or do you have to crop and what do you want to do with the photos afterwards?

With that you may enjoy sun lit scenes :)

f/2.8 zooms and faster primes is what you need. You may as well start from there

how close are you to the action with regards the dancing?

10 feet or 10 meters?

Get a Canon 35mm f/2 and a Canon 50mm f/1.8, both fast and have great IQ, particularly the 35mm. You can pick these up used for about £150 and £50 respectively.

Really, for good low light shooting you want FF (though shot and processed well, I can get great results from my 50d) so you need to look at a used 5d mk2, or even a new 6d if you can push the funds out that far?

I've also got a Tamron 28-75 2.8 and although the canon EF 70-300 f/4.0-5.6 is a bit slow it can give good results.

I think the main problem is the poor ISO capabilities of the camera, so I'll try a 60d (5D bit out of my price range for a hobby)

Just looked at the exif data from this weekends shots and found most were in the 50-90mm zoom range so will give it a go with the Tamron and see what the results are like, as can get reasonbly close within a few meters.

Here's a shot from the weekend but was forced to use a jessops flash

Digitalrev has got the 60d for £450, anyone used them as it seems very cheap/

I think a lot of people have used them on here, they have their own thread the only thing is they don't come with a UK g/tee.any problem you will have to sort out with them :)

I only have a 550D but the ISO with a 50mm 1.8 is great! Superb for indoor shots.

well I happily use the 60d at 6400 so you will be fine at that, shoot raw, a bit of noise reduction jobs a gooden.

Alternatively you may be happy with the jpeg image and need no alteration! :)

Well, just to say I bought a 60D from digital depot Stevenage for £529, in fact my wife was so pleased with the price she made me order her one as well!

I've had a 60D and I now have a 70D and there's not much difference at all in ISO performance. I swapped the 60D for a 7D for the better AF system but found the 7D a PITA in lower light/ higher ISO situations and in the end I wish I'd kept the 60D. The Jpeg files from the 60D are superb compared to the 7D IMHO and most of the shots from the 60D I didn't need to alter in PP as I was happy enough with the SOOC results.

I part exchanged the 7D for my 70D and I'm 'over the moon' with the camera. It performs as well as the 60D, or maybe slightly better in overall IQ, but has a fantastic AF system that's easy to use and I can honestly say, as I have in a few other threads, that the 70D is the best 'crop body' I've had (I've had 7 'crop' bodies, including a 1D3 and 2 full frame bodies). The 60D and 1D3 are equally the next best (mine were used for different types of shots usually).

Don't 'apologise' for only having a 550D. It's a hugely capable camera, and still just about state of the art. It'll produce photographs as well and as good as most modern cameras, and let's be honest here, most people, without the benefit of EXIF information, would not be able to tell the difference between the output of your 550D and the latest 70D, given that the conditions and glass were the same.

I never cease to be astonished at the quality of the photographs produced by some of the oldest digital SLRs. Even the 4mp ID's and D1h's, and 3mp D30's have produced images which can be compared with the best modern cameras can produce.

Modern SLRs may facilitate the taking of pictures, with technology making the process easier, but it's still the person holding the camera, helped by decent glass, who makes the picture, not the camera.

Of course, Camera manufacturers would have you believe otherwise, but then they would, wouldn't they?

I have a 60D. It's my preferred camera above all my others. It's light, with metering and AF which are very capable, and fast. n low light, with a 50mm f1.4 attached, it's astonishing, even at fairly low ISO numbers.

It's the camera I'd recommend to a friend. I'd also go as far as saying that it's the equal, or better of the 300S. :exit:

Not bad for a 20D! The skin tones here are wonderful.
