Hi,

I have been looking to replace my Canon 400D since I retired a couple of years ago and found more time for my photography. I am, shall we say, a reasonably accomplished amateur. I like my Canon and have the 50mm f1.8, 18-55m and 55-250mm lenses so want to stick with Canon. I have been looking at the 60D and 600D. When comparing them I can see only minor differences but this may be due to my inexperience. Would it be worth the extra £200 or so to go for the 60D? Would I be gaining much over the 600D? Or should I just stick with my 400D (although my daughter is hanging her nose over that at the moment as her first SLR!)?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Have you also considered the recently-announced 650D? I haven't used Canon for a couple of years, but if I were thinking about upgrading from the 400D, I'd certainly be looking at the newest in that particular family of cameras. The 650D's got all the latest technology and weighs significantly less than the 60D, which might be a factor in the decision-making process.

The 60d is significantly larger than the 600d. I use a 450d(similar to the 600d) and I now mainly use a 7d which is a step up from the 60d but of same size.

When using between them the main advantages I find in the use is the extra LCD screen on top of the 7d to view settings and the extra dial on the back of the camera. I find it is therefore much easier and quicker to change settings and be aware of what you are working at with cameras like the 60d and the 7d as opposed to the smaller xxxd cameras.

having bought a couple of 600D's with cash back for £500 with the kit lens I have to say I am impressed with the picture quality shooting raw straight out of the camera with the 10-22 lens attached. I would have no hesitation in recommending it, for me the only negative is it does feel very plasticy compared to other canon cameras I have and have handled.
But certainly worth £500 and will not disappoint, even cheaper if you just want a body and are happy with an import.

I started with a borrowed 1000D and when the time came to buy my own camera, I went for the 600D as the money/features ratio was not worthy for me between the 600d and the 60D, simply because I still have a lot to learn.
In your case I think the 60D or higher, will be a better option, compared with your 400D you get better shutter speed, autofocus system and exposure metering, that will let you improve more as a photographer. You get a more robust body and with dial at the back, plus the articulating screen.

Thanks for the replies and advice all of which was gratefully received.

I spent a lot of time in the camera dealers yesterday looking at both the 60D and 600D and finally decided on the 600D. Price was a factor but also I found the 60D a little on the large size and quite heavy in comparison. All I have to do now is have a good play with it and learn how to use it properly!

Thanks again.
