I have a 12 year old 400D and I am thinking of upgrading to a better / newer camera. A friend who has several Canons has offered me his 60D for free. That sounds like a no brainer to me but is it much of an improvement. 18mp over 12mp. WiFi uploading are the key things I have noticed.

Bite his arm off. It's a heck of a difference. Way better low light, better resolution. Just better.

Yup the 400D was a great budget DSLR in it's day - but it is now a different day! The 60D is a much better camera in all respects - forget the Mega Pixies, it is just better! I hope you don't leave too many tooth marks on his arm.

Just GET IT!!!

I've got a bit more time to reply this evening... I bought a new 400D around 12 years ago too, and it wasn't a bad camera in it's day as far as lower spec (intermediate/economy enthusiast grade) Canon DSLRs went. However, not only is the 60D 4 years more recent in terms of it's product launch date, it's also 'one digit less' better than the 400D. Basically, this means a Canon XXD will have more functions and, most likely, better all-round performance than a Canon XXXD of the same year.

So yes, there should be a noticeable improvement over your 400D... but then again, in the right conditions, the 400D could deliver some nice looking photos. Therefore, you might find that it's become a bit easier to take nice looking photos with the 60D rather than noticing a stunningly obvious improvement in sharpness and resolution. However, as others have said, the difference between the two cameras is likely to be more apparent if taking 'natural light' photos in darker conditions.

All things considered, if your friend is offering you a fully working 60D in good condition for free then what have you got to lose? If you like it, then if I were you I'd buy the kind chap a bottle of whisky, a fish and chip supper, or some other small treat to say thanks. On the other hand, if you don't like it, then just give it him back and thank him for his kindness. :)

A good Malt I hope!

I picked up the camera today and I was also given a Canon 18-200 IS lens. I might have to throw mushy peas in with the fish supper.
A bottle of Tizer too by the sounds of it. :) Hope you enjoy using the camera and don't forget to share some of your results with us. (y)

I sold my 60D, wish I hadn't

My first dslr was a 400D and for that period of time it was a great budget camera. Because of its limitations I had to learn a lot photography techniques that film guys would employ. As I recall the ISO range was 100-1600,..ha
I remember having to gorillapod, tripod in any kind of low ish light, limited AF of 1 is cross type., low fps, no wifi
As you grow in ability the 60D will be a great asset.
Get the 60D off tou mate asap, if not I would like it ! Lol
