Hi what is a good make of battery for the 60d other than canon that are coded to show in the battery meter.

I got 1 from 7Dashop for £9.99 that does the job.

Not really used it much though, just keep it as a spare.

I can second 7dayshop. Works fine and is an absolute bargain.

Thirded - they are fine.

If you get a different one make sure it's marked as fully decoded.

If we are talking BP511 , ive got quite a few (10 in total I think) , split between canon, hahnel, jessops own, and 7 day shop - and tbh i can't tell the difference in performance between them

(incidentally the reason i have so many is from doing a week's shoot on skokholm, where theres no way of recharging batteries)

The 60D takes the same battery as the 7D, its a LP-E6 which unless they are chipped won't show their condition on the camera battery meter

oops didn't know that (and wont be getting 60D anytime soon) - i just assumed they'd be the same as the 10-50 were,

SD card too, so not ideal for the existing xxD owners wanting to upgrade without paying out too much extra cash (ok for Canon though which I presume was the plan)

How does canon make money from the extra cash you spend on SD cards?

How would I know if I was chipped apart from the obvious of I being on the description.

Can cost quite a lot replacing a large batch of memory cards so existing xxD owners may be more tempted upgrading to the costlier CF compatible 7D.

Oh ok I didn't think of that. I thought you were probably going to say the camera manufacturers make deals with SD card manufacturers :D

It doesn't have to be expensive changing to sd cards, I bought a heap off amazon (sandisk class 10 jobs) for £13 a pop and at 8gb are about the biggest cards I would use to lower the risk of lost Images

Considerably dearer though for me to upgrade to the 60D than it would have been to the 50D what with new batteries and cards

Don't actually want a 60D so bit of a moot point anyway, but in these harsh economic times would have been handy if it was just the body that needed replacing

The LPE6 batteries last considerably longer than BP type batteries in my experience though - I can shoot all day and still have a fair amount of juice left over at the end of the day! I have three batteries, one Canon and two cheapo decoded batteries that came with a Meike grip. I think that the Canon battery might be slightly better in terms of holding charge though.

it is irritating that they've come up wiith so many different batts tho

you have your 1D and 1DS taking one sort

the 10-50D on another ( I cant remember if the 350/400 also took these)

the 450-550 on another

and the 60 and 7D on yet another (what do the 5D take ?)

surely it wouldnt have been beyond the wit on man to standardise on one or at most two different types

ok thanks for the replies. I'll get a one as a backup then.

That was a pesticide plant, what does it have to do with batteries?

I think he's saying that union carbide also make cheap batteries and we should boycott them because of bhopal - ive no idea if that true or not - it seems somewhat unlikely , most cheap batteries are probably made in the samne factories that make the expensive ones
