Just bought a Canon 600D from Argos (£399.99). Bit concerned as I always thought the 600D came with a IS kit lens, this one does not. The box has 18-55mm III lens on it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks

Dave

Take it back and ask for the rest of your purchase.

It's possible to the 600D body only, but if the box says it should have a lens included in the box, and it's missing, then they owe you a lens.

EDIT: Sorry, just re-read your post. The 600D can be supplied with the IS or non IS kit lens. Sounds like you didn't read the advert properly. You might be able to take it back to exchange it but if they haven't made a mistake with their listing/advert then you'll struggle for a refund.

Well according to their web site, your assumptions are correct.

I guess now it depends on how good their customer service actually is,
when you take it back and tell them the lens wasn't in there.

Was the box sealed when you got it?
It may have been a return for that very reason,
or God forbid, someone had it "away" and returned the camera.

Who knows
But good luck

Thanks everyone - looks like I dropped one. Other retailers I looked at sold it with a IS lens, Argos sell it with a non-IS lens. Harsh lesson here....

Don't worry too much.....whatever kit lens you got you'll be upgrading it soon anyway!!

Yeah just annoyed with myself, took a long time to save up for this. Never mind, still better than my old Fuji 6500fd bridge!

cheers

Actually I must admit that I read it that way too,
So you are not alone ;)

A few retailers do this, I've seen non IS kits in Currys and Jessops as well.

Argos will take it back and refund you no questions asked if you decide you don't want it.

IS on an 18-55 won't be required much anyway ;) if it was a longer lens then you'll see the difference! Don't hurt yourself over it, it's you who will be taking the photo, not IS

when i got my 1100d i was in the same boat i got the non is lens to it is still a sharp lens as its such a short focal range i don't think you will see a hell of a lot of difference in it tbh as said is can only do so much

Good man.

We had a discussion about kit lenses recently, with the general conclusion that usually they are sharp and very usable, with the only disadvantages being they are slow and construction is often a bit plasticky. Enjoy your new camera & lens.

As already said IS on an 18-55 isn't needed much TBH.
Depends whether you want to do any low-light / slow shutter speed work.
If available light shooting is your interest then it can be very useful.

Yeah I guess if your doing hand held low light it could have some use. I don't do any hand held night work so didn't really think of that.

Must admit i fell into this same issue when i was buying my camera for the first time. I got it for £360 including staff discount tho so wasnt too bad :)

Happy shooting

Bit disappointing, but not worth getting upset about.

I haven't bought a camera in the UK since I was a teenager, which was rather a long time ago! Don't dealers open the box and go through the contents with you at the point of sale? Most South Africa dealers I've dealt with insist on this, and some ask you to sign and confirm that everything is there, and correct.

Most DEALERS will do this, although I've never actually been asked to sign anything to say it's all there.

Trouble is that Argos is not a dealer, just a catalogue store selling boxes.
The onus is on the buyer to know what they are buying, although in fairness they do have a very generous returns policy.
These days a lot of people are buying on-line so you have to make sure you know exactly what you are buying, and also the returns policy of the vendor.
