 Newbie here looking into getting a 2nd lens for my new 600D, at the moment all ive got is the stock lens that came with the camera 18-55 but im now on the lookout for one with a better zoom of around 250 or 300mm..

ive seen a couple on amazon Canon EF-S 55-250mm or Canon EF 75-300mm both around the same money but the 300mm does not have IS would this be an issue or not.? or would i be better going for a tamron or sigma..?

plz some one help :help: as i dont want to buy something that will turn out to be a waste of money....

 Many thanks for any info & advice you may give

I have the 55-250mm IS and it is a very good lens for the money. Don't waste your money on the 75-300mm as it is an old lens and not very good.

:agree:

The Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM is also rated as a very good lens but is more expensive.

I currently have the 55-250 and it is an excellent lens.

I had the canon 70-300 f4-5.6 is usm for a while.
I liked it when i had it BUT my copy was very very soft over 200mm. so much so that the results were often/usually unuseable. it had to be stopped down to f8 to get a bit sharp at 200mm.

with the benefit of hindsight i would have got the 70-200mm F4 l lens instead ( if you can stretch to it) or maybe even the 200mm f2.8 prime.

the 55-250 seems a popular choice and is great for the price although on amazon i don't think it is from amazon but fulfilled by another seller ??

also pop over to the 600D owners thread here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=378450 if you have any further questions or advice for other 600D owners :)

Can concur that the Canon 55-250mm lens is an excellent 2nd choice lens. There's a mark 2 version of this lens and I don't think that there is any improvement optically.. so I would try and find a mark 1 version for less.

I agree the 55-250 is a great lens for the money. I have one and I am really impressed with some of the results I have got. If you do a quick search you'll find it is highly rated here as a beginner zoom :)

+1 for the 55-250 IS. It's a great lens and gives great IQ and fairly fast AF for the price and is a lot better than the 75-300. I bought a 75-300 when I got my first dslr at christmas 2010 and sold it after a couple of months as I was so disappointed with it.
If you have a decent budget for a lens though, you could always look out for a second hand 70-200 f4 L and a 1.4x teleconverter as you would get a brilliant, versatile and very impressive lens which gives excellent IQ all the time.

+ another for the 55-250IS lens, for the money, it's a belter od a lens.

I wouldn't buy the 75-300 lens, if you do want / need / would like the 300mm, then as has already been recommended, the Canon 70-300IS is a cracker of a lens and well worth a look at.

Then you jump to the 70-200 L range ...
