Canon 5DMKIV Touch Focus

I notice the 5DMKIV has a touch focus. I've never used it. Is it as good as manual and auto focus?

IME, it’s very fast, even with a 3rd party lens. I use it only to focus in live view, not to take the image. I’m old school and prefer a viewfinder and shutter button for that.

My main reason for using it is to meter and then check the histogram, so I can expose to the right without overexposing.

I don’t have a 5DIV, the other half has an 80D with touch-screen focusing. I find it useful when the camera is tripod mounted, especially for macro. In general use, she has it disabled.

I rarely use this on my 5D4. Only when on a tripod with live view. I would probably have used this method if photographing a painting (very rare) and occasionally for some table top or macro shots. Since setting up back button focusing, I use that for everything.

It uses phase detect pixels, which is the tech used on mirrorless cameras. It's probably more accurate for focussing as it's straight from the sensor and doesn't have potential alignment errors that arise from using a separate autofocus system.

I'll try and remember to put it on when in live view the next time I'm out and do a little testing.

I have the RP, so not a DSLR, but the touch focus is active whenever the live view is on, which is very handy as I use live view a lot.
Often I'll use it to place the focus point in roughly the right area, then zoom in to adjust the focus and make it perfect.
