Hi
I am hoping to upgrade my Canon 450D to a full frame for Christmas. Based on reviews I have seen I have been veering towards the new Canon 6D which should be available shortly but now wondering whether I should maybe go for a second hand 5D MkIII. Does anyone have any advice/opinions on which way to go?

Many thanks

What sort of stuff do you shoot?

Both cameras have their merits, and one will arguably be more suited to what you do than the other.

Pretty varied but mainly wildlife, landscapes, portraits and Motorsport.

Thanks for your comments. Still some research to do. Thanks for the welcome too:)

Unless you need the focusing performance there's always the option of a second hand 5D II. Image quality wise they're great cameras. The 5D III is built better and, in my opinion, feels much more like a pro camera than the mark II, but I used the mark II everyday for a couple of years and never had any major issues (focusing aside).

Thanks Adam, I was beginning to wonder about the mark II. What do you mean about the focussing performance?

Its focusing system is more or less the same as the 450D, so only a small number of points and because the sensor is larger there grouped more towards the center of the frame.

The 6D seems to have a similar system but with the center point upgraded to work in very low light.

The 5D mark 3 has a much more advanced professional system.

One thing to consider is I'd say whether your getting good value, new cameras tend to sell at a prenium in the early days then drop significantly within a few months.

The 5D mark 3 for example was £3000 at launch in the UK but is now pretty easy to pickup for £2500 and is as cheap as £1900 from grey importers like digitalrev. As has been said it'll be hard to find used and I would expect wouldnt save you much money anyway.

The 6D seems like it'll be around £1800 at launch but I would not be supprized if its £1500 or less by next summer.

The 5D mark 2 can be had for close to £1000 used from places like MPB as people upgrade and supply outstripes demand.

I see you have a Mark II. I would be interested in hearing your opinions on the comparison once you have tried the 6D.

From what I have read they are 85% similar , we use tethered camera all over the studio, so I am hoping to remove the need for cables.

We will be upgrading 3x40'ds not the 5d mk2's there is no need to upgrade the mk2's they work very well.

Thank you all for your responses. Very helpful and I certainly have a better grasp of things now than I did yesterday! It will be interesting to hear people's views of the 6D once it is available but I think on reflection that the 5DMkIII is the one I hope to go for. May have to wait until the new year now though. Thanks again.

The focus system would be my primary concern especially for fast moving stuff. I believe the 6D only has one cross type whereas the 5D MkIII has 41, going by my own experience with the Nikon D3 compared to the Canon 5D Classic (huge difference in focus systems), shooting my dog at full pelt was a pleasure with the D3 but rather hard work with the 5D - especially if he was running towards me.
