Canon 5dMk2 - Cracking up.. Has anyone else experienced?

Looks like a depression over the upper half of the crack in this shot:

^^Agree. Does anything press against this part of the camera when it's packed in your bag?

I'd stick some gaffer tape on it and not worry about it.

I had a new top plate fitted to a 10D, wasnt that expensive, less than £100 as I recall.
Might be worth calling Borehamwood.
Also isnt there an EU ruling stating product warranty is 2 years even though manufacturers try and wriggle with one, or is that just electrical products (hence JL offering free 2 yr warranty on most of their stuff?).
Looks like a stress crack to me as its starting at the point of stress concentration where the shape change is most noticeable.

Not the same camera but a top plate replacement and full check over for my 7D was £180 with Canon Elstree.

That is the sale of goods act and is a UK law. Essentially if there is a fault with the goods which occurs within a reasonable time then it is the responsibility of the store you purchased it from to make amends.

However it is not that simple. In the first 6 months the store have to prove it isn't faulty wheras after the first 6 months the consumer has to prove it is a manufacturing defect.

The 1 year cover manufacturers offer pretty much covers the store period, but outside that if you can prove the goods are faulty then the store must deal with it.

For a £1500+ camera they should be built to last at least 5 years!

Out of interest - why did you guys have your top plates replaced?

E-bay purchase of the camera only to find out immaculate meant something different to me than it did him. Pop-up failed 2 months after purchase, switch was corroded with salt water (as is part of teh body - which still works fine) etc.

Sent it to Elstree on Friday - got an email this morning to say that the repair will cost £152 inclusive. Replacing the top plate - however no explanation as to how it was caused. As it's over a year - they won't do anything under warranty - however as I'm a member of the CPS it'll be back in a couple of days. A bit disappointing as I'm still none the wiser as to the cause.

I've wracked my brains and can't think of a single occassion where there'd be an impact to cause such a crack. Ah well - hopefully it'll be back quickly - and then I can get back to using this great piece of kit.. Got an up to date shutter count as well - so I can see that at 35k - I've got a long way to go before it needs a new shutter (hopefully!)

Maybe its trying to ditch the prism and mirror box, and create its own EVF....;)

Chris, I find it amazing how some things just happen out of the blue. The cynic in me used to think manufacturers but a timer into their products so they broke at specific points after the warranty ran out (cars in particular)

Glad you've got it sorted :)

My 5D Mk11 fell over on the tripod, long story but it cracked the top body section and top LCD also. Canon charged £170.00 for the repair, took about a month as parts were required from Japan.

Oh mine was covered via insurance

Can anyone confirm if Elstree will repair out of warranty 7d's that were imported? It had a big drop today and smashed the top LCD, screen protector and slightly dented the top case (hopefully that can get straightened). If they don't where is the next best to send it to?

No it's out of warranty - from where it's cracked though, I can't see where the impact point would be? There's no marking to suggest a bang? It's confused me..

looks like it hit the front corner of the prism to me, or very close to that
